Our first spambot (http://mindromp.org/forum/member.php?u=108).
I've changed the registration process to require janitorial approval now that we're on the spambot radar.
It took a couple weeks longer than I expected!

But, but, but what if I want to buy authentic Murano glass wearables and accessories? Who are you to deprive me of that information?

A pal had trouble joining this evening. I think that those admins have taken care of it. Geez, I feel like I am not pulling my weight. I haven't been quick enough to answer a single user request...

I'll write up an explanation on how to tell the bots from the real people and send it to you guys.
I"m going too many different directions tonight. starting a bunch of stuff but not getting any of it completed...

Shouldn't this be public?

No it shouldn't, IMO.
I don't want to give spambot developers any hints about what I look for. It's an arms race.

I think we can encourage good practices among the members, too. Can we disable linkys until approved by a person? I would take on that job (if someone has time to teach it to me)

Does your objection have a reason? Or just a forward slash?

there is a hack that requires a set number of posts before links work. we installed it at TR and promptly afterward a scientist joined and wanted to share links to some of his research on feathered dinosaur fossils that had been found in China. Not being able to post links frustrated him and he didn't hang around.
It's not an easy balance - making things work smoothly for people and still make it difficult for bots.

We had this discussion before, only about images/avatars, iirc .. I still think it preferable to trust members to do the right thing, and just remove any links to illegal stuff if they're posted. In my experience it's not a big issue to deal with that way if necessary.

When the Technological singularity happens it will be spambots not a military computer.
