Besides looking like they are wearing sumo suits they are capable of a metabolic feat called cryptobiosis. Under cryptobiosis the Tardigrade can slow it's metabolism down to 0.01% of normal. The cryptobiosis is total, anhydrobiosis (water content is 1% of normal; in this condition the Tardigrade can survive for ten years), cryobiosis (temperature drops), osmobiosis (maintains osmotic levels) and anoxybiosis (slows down oxygen requirements).
This enables them to withstand huge pressures, like those in the Mariana Trench. Or, wait for it, no pressure, like in outer space.
