Digging up evidence of the Queen of Sheba^s wealth page 1

oblivion 12th February 2012, 02:43 AM It's almost Indiana Jones-esque. A legendary queen, her empire, and the source of her treasures. Almost 3,000 years ago, the ruler of Sheba, which spanned modern-day Ethiopia (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/ethiopia) and Yemen, arrived in Jerusalem with vast quantities of gold to give to King Solomon. Now an enormous ancient goldmine, together with the ruins of a temple and the site of a battlefield, have been discovered in her former territory. Louise Schofield, an archaeologist and former British Museum curator, who headed the excavation on the high Gheralta plateau in northern Ethiopia, said: "One of the things I've always loved about archaeology (http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/archaeology) is the way it can tie up with legends and myths. The fact that we might have the Queen of Sheba's mines is extraordinary." An initial clue lay in a 20ft stone stele (or slab) carved with a sun and crescent moon, the

How to live like a monk page 1

oblivion 12th February 2012, 02:35 AM The associate professor's course on monastic life and asceticism gives students at the University of Pennsylvania a firsthand experience of what it's like to be a monk. At various periods during the semester, students must forego technology, coffee, physical human contact and certain foods. They'll also have to wake up at 5 a.m. — without an alarm clock. That's just a sample of the restrictions McDaniel imposes in an effort to help students become more observant, aware and disciplined. Each constraint represents an actual taboo observed by a monastic religious order. <snip> The discipline starts with a dress code for class: White shirts for the men, black shirts for women, and they must sit on opposite sides of the class. No makeup, jewelry or hair products. Laptops are prohibited; notes can be taken only with paper and pen. And don't even think of checking your cellphone for texts or email. The cours

Dawkins droning on about muslims again page 1

Exi5tentialist 11th February 2012, 11:08 PM Dawkins (http://richarddawkins.net/discussions/644919-discussion-thread-for-one-law-for-all-rally-london-or-anywhere-in-the-world/comments?page=1#comment_916705) is back on his hobby horse, with his write-up of today's so-called One Law for All rally. He's forgotten, obviously, that in England there is only one law - english law - so why he's started campaigning for something that's already in place Christ only knows. I hope when he next hobnobs with the Archbishop of Canterbury, aside from heaping vast amounts of excessive praise on him (he's a white englishman, you see as opposed to an Germano-Italian or Shi'ite Iranian), Richard will ask Rowan Williams to extract an answer from his superiors. In the meantime we'll have to assume he's yet again targeting what's known as Sharia Law, which actually isn't a law in England and Wales, and never will be. In some cases it seems, muslims are resorting

FedUpWithFaith 11th February 2012, 10:28 PM OK, I know this is a longshot, but I sent the following email to David Thorne, the NYT best-selling humorist and all around hilarious troll. Probably won't go anywhere but was worth a shot. Subject: Thanks for the free laughs Mr. Thorne Saturday, February 11, 2012 9:45 PM From: "FedUpWithFaith" <fedupwithfaith@yahoo.com> To: david@27bslash6.com Dear David, I was introduced to your hilarious work at the splinter of a splinter of a splinter of the old now-defunct Richard Dawkins forum (here: http://mindromp.org/forum/showthread.php?p=16975#post16975 (http://mindromp.org/forum/showthread.php?p=16975#post16975)) Your musings are the funniest I’ve read since Woody Allen’s “Without Feathers”. Funnier in fact, and a much better deal, as I paid $1.50 for his book in 1974 money and just read your website for nothing. So the laughter-to-dollar ratio with you has been infinite for me so far. Our Posts Part I page 1

divagreen 11th February 2012, 08:49 PM This thread was inspired by this exchange: I can make a copy of the database one weekend. Doing it from a particular point in time would be a total pain. Just dumping the whole database would be relatively simple. If what you want is the content - the posts, that's all you need to start a new forum with all the current posts as of the time of that copy. If this is something you guys would actually do I won't be posting here anymore. I try to avoid connecting my online username to my real life identity, but I also try to avoid participating in any online discussions that would embarrass me (or worse) if they were linked to my actual life somehow. This is not a board that I would be upset to be seen to post on. But if someone can easily take all my posts and put them on their own site, whatever it may be, in such a way that it looks like I'd been participating there all along...that's not acceptable to me.
