Tonight I am going to a fencing salle out of town. I had heard my name was mentioned up there as being particularly skilled. I called up there a bit ago to see if I could show up tonight and the guy was all, "yeah," and he asked my name. When I told him he was like, "I knew it was you!" and he told me about stuff they did there.
What if I suck tonight and they're all, "wow we were wrong about that guy, he sucks"
What if I suck tonight and they're all, "wow we were wrong about that guy, he sucks"

Nothing wrong with fear of failure. We all have it.
Why would you suck all of a sudden? You didn't get that reputation for no reason.
It's OK to be concerned but once you get there you have to forget about your fears and remember you are that particularly skilled fencer they already decided you are.
Good luck, you'll be great I'm sure.

Meh, I lost some and won some, against the same people.
They mentioned my movements are too large and that's a problem I've had for a long time but I can't seem to fix it.
I'm fast as a cobra though and that's probably the only reason I don't get slaughtered all the time. I really, really, really need to tighten up my movements nt I have a hard time with that.

Nick, I have had this problem for years with yoga (periphereal limbs moving widely) too! I have noticed that it seems to be predominant with people with hyper flexible joints although it is not exclusive. Also, it is a way for someone to balance out a weakened core.
I wish I could watch you fence sometime, I would cheer you on! :cheer:

I don't think I have hyper flexible joints at all.
I'm pretty flexible for being eight feet tall and five hundred pounds, but I'm not flexible compared to most people.

Hyperflexibility is best assessed through circumduction, not necessarily extension, so you may have hyper flexible joints and not even know it!
For example, your hamstrings or lower lumbar area could still be tight, so you would have a hard time touching your toes. But if you circumduct your leg and it has a wide range of motion, then your hip could be considered hyperflexed. :)

Honestly? I can kiss my own feet.
Not that I would. I'm not into that sort of thing.

I cannot touch my toes, though. My Achilles tendons have issues. I had surgery to lengthen them when I was 14 or 13 or something.

That is pretty interesting cos from the pic that showed of you fencing I would never have guessed that! You seemed to have an even stance with a good relationship between your center of gravity and the ground.
I don't know much about fencing, although it is a sport that I like to watch. If the feedback that you are getting is that your arms are swinging too wide you might want to start stretching out your pec majors and minors and flexing those rhomboids (those are the muscles between your shoulder blades) while dropping your shoulders down. This can keep the scapula from anterioraly rotating and bring the arms down into more of a protective stance that comes from your core. It will take time and practice, though. It always does when introducing new muscle memory.
I could be totally off base and if I am I am sorry. I hope you win!
