It's huge and it's cheap.
We have long term plans to move to Ireland and this place would be perfect. It's only an hour to Dublin, a commute that I do nowdays living on the outskirts of a major city in Australia.
Even if it needs some lovin' I reckon I could do the work.
And the repayments are only $643 Australian a month. What could go wrong?

Nothing. Do it. Don't even wait for the paper work, just move in right now.

Nah, most of them have moved to New Zealand.

Buying property half a world away is very risky.
My parents only live 45 minutes away. They can go and have a look at it for me and then I can have a proper look when I go there in June.
What started as a joke look around last night has suddenly become quite serious.
PE, Imma wearing pyjamas everywhere there.

Dont hire your parents as caretaker, if you do this you need to have a proper unfamiliar paid service to oversee the property.
What are your intentions with this property?

To turn it into a Fort and hold off invaders!
Or to live in it when we finally move over or use it as an investment property.
I'm not going to get my parents to be proper caretakers, just to look at it and tell me how bad it is. Don't know what I'll do if we actually decide to buy the thing.

A house with "vast potential"? From what I recall that is real-estate-agent-speak for "ruin" or "derelict structure that'll cost you a fortune to make habitable".
And yes, looking at the ceiling height of the rooms in the first two floors, I'd hate to have to pay the heating bill, especially on days with sleet and snow. Be prepared for nights at 20°C below freezing.

Our understanding of insulating and efficiency have improved a lot in the last little while. This could make the winters less of a problem, but do keep in mind that it can be a terrible bill. I burn a thousand liters of diesel or so a year heating a TINY, very well-insulated home.
Do you mind wearing gore-tex and goose down to breakfast?

And not at all!
Actually I was wondering what some modern insulation would do to the place. Especially in the walls which, from what I've seen of other old, old houses, don't seem to be well insulated. By which I mean, not at all.

You could make a difference, but might be good to get an idea of the cost of building materiels there/then.

Yah, definitely.
It really was a spur of the moment "damn, that's cheap, we could afford that" to "hey, that is cheap...we could afford that..."
