I have to set this up a bit.

I was taking a swim this afternoon and there was a little girl (about eight or nine, I guess) who was having a bit of a tantrum because she was doing something along the line of a synchronized swimming routine and she wanted everyone to watch her. Her mother must be one of those stage-mom types, because the kid could do no wrong, even when she purposely splashed total strangers doing laps and drove her own little brother out of the pool in tears.

Anyway, when the kid & mom finally realized the adults swimming weren't going to climb out and applaud, she continued her "show" just for mom.

Mom encouraged her with promises of being the winner of whatever competition she was going out for, as well as assuring her she was going to win an Olympic gold medal and be famous etc., but then she had a brainstorm.

Mom: "You're going to be a movie star! You're going to be the next Ethel Merman!"

Kid: "Wha? Ethel Mermaid?"

Mom: "Ethel Merman! She was a movie star who starred in swimming movies!"

Kid: "Ethel Merman! Ethel Merman! I'm the next Ethel Merman!"

Of course the mother was thinking of Esther Williams, but I almost drowned myself from laughing. They didn't even notice. Ha!
