I live in the midst of urban/suburban sprawl, and it's easy to miss the tapestry of changes that sweep by as the earth revolves around the sun. But I try. What I am not good at is remembering if a particular change this year happens early or late compared to most years.

So, I'm not sure if I should be surprised to walk out into a rain of seeds pouring down from the front yard sycamore tree this morning. The winter has been quite mild, and a little short on rain so far.

The lack of rain makes me think that maybe the seeds are a little late.

Fluffy seeds are so pretty though. I never mind cleaning up catkins in late spring, or floating seed fluffs in fall. I picture birds lining nests with the spring fluffs.

Seasons here are very definite, and when they begin to change over I start obsessively looking for signs.

I'm already longing for spring, which is almost 3 months away. If we have a mild week in February there might be some early pussywillows. In late march young maple and willow stems will begin to turn red or green or yellow, first live colour in the landscape. Always gives me a lift.

The first daffodil bloomed on Sunday.

And yesterday, I noticed that the bare branches weren't quite as bare you'd think.

This tree will be covered in flowers within a couple of weeks.

It's been a mild winter in the midwest, too. We still have patches and piles of snow where there were deep drifts, in shady areas, and where piled up by plows/shoveling.

No signs of greenery anywhere.
