Some terminology is pretty much universal to Mafia games, and some is unique to specific mafia communities. The lingo at MindRomp is (at least initially) a meld of universal terms and terms that are common on a few other sites. I thought it might be helpful to start a list of terms. Feel free to add to this, and feel free to ask about terms you see but don't understand.

I'll start with a few that I've seen so far in the current game.

Meta, meta-game, meta-gaming

Meta or meta-game refers to players' game history - how they play when they are town, scum, special, etc. Putting a vote on someone for "meta reasons" indicates the voter is basing their vote on historical behaviors. This is in contrast to objective tells. meta-gaming or "playing for the meta" means that the player is (or is thought to be) playing a role a certain way for their future reputation. Playing an indie role in an uber-protown manner would be an example of meta-gaming.

objective tells, scum tells

Objective [scum] tells are behaviors that look scummy on the face of it, no matter who the player, and no matter how they behave historically.

Sticky Vote

I think I coined this one. It's used to describe a vote that seems unusually set in stone, either for the situation or in terms of the player's usual town behavior (see meta)

trolley-track

This term was brought to mafia by bilirubin/jasona. The term originated in ice hockey.

Trolley tracks Coined by Don Cherry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Cherry_%28ice_hockey%29), the trolley tracks are two 'lanes' in the neutral zone, located midway between the center face-off dot and the boards, spanning from blue-line to blue-line. They are named this due to the common occurrence of a forward receiving a pass from his defense-man during breakout, and then getting completely demolished by an opposing player, usually because they are still looking back at where the pass had originated. This pass is often referred to as a suicide pass. It can be blamed on either the defense-man for setting up such an obvious pass, or the player receiving the pass for not keeping their head up.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_ice_hockey_terms

In mafia, the term is used to describe a town player who thinks another player is scum, and is focused to the exclusion of any game info that indicates they are wrong or that someone else is a better target for lynch or night action.

I'd add also that meta has also become used to describe using information from outside of game thread gameplay. Eg someone who is added to the game after the roles have initially gone out might be assumed to be vanilla town (as the game will be unbalanced otherwise), or the online/offline activity of a player, or a comment outside of the game thread.

WIFOM stands for "Wine in Front of Me", and it harks from The Princess Bride.

Strictly speaking, it means following tenuous chains of "what is scum trying to make me think/do?"

Player X is the scum night kill. Player X was after players Y and Z the day before. Did scum kill Player X because Player Y or Z are scum? Or did they kill Player X in order to cast suspicion on Player Y or Z? Oh, but they'd know I'd think that it's because Player X was right, so Player Y and Z must be town. It's an endless hall of mirrors.

It appears to me that the definition has grown more diffuse over time, and gets applied to any down-the-rabbit-hole logic chains players get stuck in. You'll see references to "self-WIFOM", which usually relates to a person trying to figure out if they're trolley-tracking or if their suspicions are well-founded.

WIFOM has also been watered down to describe a post that is non commital, eg, well Player X might be town because of this thing but then again they might be scum because of that thing.

When i'm town i want to see people actually putting their money where their mouth is and making a prediction on Player X's alignment. I ant to know if the poster is leaning town or scum on Player X.

Non commital wishy washy behavior is also known as hedging.
gib
22nd January 2012, 06:32 PM
hedging is of course an example of an objective tell. It looks scummy because it looks like the poster already knows the alignment of Player X but is pretending they don't. You'll often see a scum player vote to lynch a townie and keep expressing doubts.

'Lynch all liars' is a standard bit of mafia lingo also. Town players have no reason to lie about their alignment or their actions. Scum have every reason to lie about their alignment and their actions. If you catch a player telling a lie in game, they are most likely scum. Lynch them.

As was drummed into me in one of my first games, "wrong" does not equate to "liar". So, a false statement has to be weighed in that light, too. Also, town players may be less careful about fact-checking than scum, and for that reason sometimes say wrong stuff.

In other words, while "Lynch all Liars" is a good rule of thumb, it's not a fool-proof ticket to lynching scum.

In other words, while "Lynch all Liars" is a good rule of thumb, it's not a fool-proof ticket to lynching scum.

Other examples are Specials claiming vanilla town. A blatant lie, but a pro-town move until they're ready to reveal.

Alternatively, some players like to claim special to throw off scum. Claiming seer may get the scum to waste their vote on you, and thus protect another pro-town special. Generally, this is considered anti-town play as it confuses other townies just as much as scum.

Flail the desperate often nonsensical attempts by a member of the mafia to change the vote when the bandwagon is heavily on a member of the mafia.
oblivion
2nd March 2012, 07:58 PM
Flail also happens when a player comes under personal pressure. Scum players may flail because their role has built in pressure to look uninformed, and additional pressure may have additional impact. Town players also flail under pressure. It can be a matter of degree, which is difficult to judge sometimes.

Also, some players tend to be cooler under pressure when they are scum than when they are town.
borealis
2nd March 2012, 08:06 PM
Depends on whether a town flailer has a special role or not, too. I don't worry about being lynched when I'm vanilla town, but if you've got a big bw on you and you don't want to out as a special cause it's early in the game it can be hard not to flail and look even more suspicious.
