Some Add-ons I think we will want page 1

Stuff we'll probably want:

AME - The Automatic Media Embeder (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=189267) - alternative to youtube tags and recognizes some other sites as well as youtube.

Cyb - PayPal Donate (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=177563) - donation app. has some neat features for helping the eventual treasurer, and for running a fundraiser.

Favorite Smilies (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=123116) - lets you pick your favorite smilies to display first, so they are always in the smilie box when doing advanced edit. If a site has more than a couple dozen smilies, this comes in very handy.

Mini Navbar (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=125790) - this duplicates the breadcrumb at the top of the page between the logo and the blue bar and puts it at the bottom of the page. Makes navigation easy when you get to the bottom of a thread.

My Threads - My Posts (http://services.milado.net/) - adds these links to the drop down search menu in the navbar (blue bar etc.)d

Nested Quotes (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/misc.php?do=producthelp&pid=nested_quotes) - enables quote nesting, and lets you configure how deep the nesting can go.

Poll Criteria for Notices (http://www.webprocafe.com/) - basically what this does is add a new criterion for when a notice at the top of the page is displayed. If you have a poll going on where you really want member input, the notice will be visible for members until/unless they vote in the poll. After they vote, the notice goes away. It works as an incentive. :D

Quick Auto Image-Resize (Posts & Signature) (http://www.provb.org/) - this will automatically resize externally hosted images that are huge so they display within the confines of a regular width post. The full size image can be seen in an new browser tab/window by clicking on the resized image

Quote Post in PM (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/misc.php?do=producthelp&pid=qpipm_38) - you go to a PM page with the recipient (the post author), the title (re the thread name), and the quoted post all filled in. Very convenient feature.

Quotes Validation (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/misc.php?do=producthelp&pid=vqbc_rayj2009) - gives you a warning and doesn't let you make the post until you correct the mismatched quotes problem. TR members really like this one. Given that we don't intend to allow post edits, catching mismatches before they happen is a really useful feature.

Reply to all (http://exaltic.com/products/replytoall) - adds a "reply to all" button to PMs.

Return to Top (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=225065) - adds a button to each post for going to the top of the page. I've modified this add-on at TR to also include a "Go to Bottom" button.

SK - Comprehensive Ignore System (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=181626) - lets members ignore threads and forums as well as other members.

vBCode table (http://vbulletin.green-sparklet.de/product.php?do=redirect&productid=stg_table&productversion=0.1.6.0) - this is a complicated bbcode that lets you create a table in your thread. Some of you have seen these tables at TR or FF.

Some other add-ons to think about:

Sakera's Hide Poll Result (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/misc.php?do=producthelp&pid=sakeras_hide_poll_results) - this add on allows the poll starter to specify that the poll results are hidden until the poll completes (if there is an end-time). The OPer and admins can see the results while the poll is still open. This feature can be useful in some situations. Think about how MZ's poll might have gone if the results had been hidden until the poll completed. The "winning" side would not have had that information to heckle people arguing the "losing" side. The downside is that people actually want to see the interim results before deciding how to vote. We have tried this one at TR in major decision type polls, but have gone back to the normal poll behavior.

MySmilies vB (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/misc.php?do=producthelp&pid=sv_mysmiliesvb) - I doubt we will want this one because it lets members upload their own smilies to the server and use them with the same  code as the regular smilies available to all members

Members who have Visited (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/misc.php?do=producthelp&pid=paulm_wvt_38) - this adds some additional info to the "what's going on" statistics at the bottom of the page. It shows all members who have visited the site in the last 24 hours, and shows the largest number of members to have ever visited in 24 hours since the installation of the add on, and when that happened.

There are lots of other add-ons we may want to take a look at. An add-on for a form (to have people check off that they understand each piece of the vision/constitution/whatever we decide a new member should acknowledge in detail) might be a huge nice-to-have. There are also modifications I've made at TR that are not packaged add-ons. Things like adding a second navbar to the top of the page, moving the edit button across the page from the quote button, adding the thread start date to the forum thread listings, and probably other stuff that I'll realize we can't live without once I notice we don't have them. :D

I like all of those except the smilie upload one. There are websites that host smilies they can use and link to. Doc X on FF uses one.

I also like having a toned down navigation bar at the bottom of the page. I use the new posts link at the bottom of FF pages all the time.

I never even noticed that link. I'll have to figure out how to make that happen

Can you copy the HTML from the top New Posts link to the footer between 'previous thread' and 'next thread'?

Most of those look good.

Moving the edit button, and/or making it red to distinguish it would be useful for admins. Did we decide general membership won't have the edit button? Or will they have a short edit window?

Not in favour of the "hide poll result" option, but willing to give it a try if it's what people want.

Yes! Gonzo's cat scrabble is a fun example ...

re the edit button . .. If we get mafia going here and allow some GM access to tools, moving the edit button will be useful in avoiding edit errors there, too.

basically, yes, but it will need some deconstruction. The navbar code is one huge honkin headache of a nested if-then-else statement.

I really like the layout at RDF, then the others when I could copy it (can't remember what the skin is called...subsilver2 or prosilver...I think the former)

I often used the 'view active topics' button and haven't seen one here...

There is a "Today's Posts" link under Quick Links. When I start work on the navbar modifications, I'll make that one a separate link like "New Posts". "New Posts" shows all the threads with posts that you have not yet read.

I thought of two more add-ons.

We'll definitely want the PostSpy add on, that gives you a live feed of new posts as they are made. And we may want the LaTex add on. Depends on if we wind up with members who want to sling equations and formulae at each other in threads.

I'm ready to get my geek on. I thought I would start with this add-on

Nested Quotes (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/misc.php?do=producthelp&pid=nested_quotes) - enables quote nesting, and lets you configure how deep the nesting can go.

Seraph, do you want to work together on some of these? do you use IM? We could go through a couple of add-ons together. they aren't that difficult once you've done a few, but it is kinda scary initially, and with the really complex changes, it's ALWAYS kinda scary.

also, do you have a vbulletin.org account? I will set you up as a sysadmin now if you do.

I have no vBulletin account I am aware of, but I do use MIM for instant messaging. Do I need to register an account with vB myself before I can be set up as a sysadmin?

re the smiley upload one... is there a way for people to set up the links for their favourite smilies, rather than upload them to the forum? That'd be great if poss. That is easy. I have a photobucket account. One of my albums contains a couple of dozen smileys I like the most. I use them by hotlinking to them via the image tag like this, for example: http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x59/Hermit_graphics/Smileys/aeadea91.gif

What I need is actually the email address that you will use to register at vbulletin.com and vbulletin.org.

I don't use MIM. It's a phone app? I mostly use gtalk and MSN IM.

You need to have pbucket open to do that. It's a PITA to keep having to do that IMO, plus on an iPad or iPhone the multitasking really isn't up to the job. If we could park the hotlinks themselves, that'd make it all much easier, because then all you need to remember is the :label: you've given to a particular smiley

I think what you are asking is if it is possible to automatically subscribe to any thread you post in. And the answer is yes. In the UserCP, click edit options and scroll down to the second box. The second section of that box is the default subscription mode. Select the option you like. This is also the selection that lets you get emails when there are new posts in a subscribed thread.

My next task is photo resizing. After that, what do you think I should tackle next?

eta this is done. see this post for an example: http://mindromp.org/forum/showpost.php?p=218&postcount=6

There seems nothing particularly urgent left to do in the nuts & bolts department. All I can think of at the moment is to add <strikethrough> to the 'Reply to Thread' box.

The high priority thing left to do now is a collaborative effort: blocking out our values, and publishing them where most forums place their <strikethrough>draconian and repressive prohibitions</strikethrough> rules and guidelines. We have a number of suggestions already, but the job is yet to be finished. Not wanting to reinvent the entire motor car, I had a look at some other forums. Most of them included a disclaimer regarding responsibility for content of posts lying solely with its author. This got me wondering if such a disclaimer actually affords any legal protection from lawsuits to the forum managers themselves, which in turn led me to Australian laws as they relate to the internet. (It turns out that the disclaimers are about as effective as trying out a magic spell to stop a car careening towards you in its tracks.) Having thus successfully launched myself on a major tangent, I got no further with what I set out to do in the first place. Apologies for that.

I decided to move Today's Posts because I kept hitting that link when I wanted the "New Posts" link. Too many display posts links too close together! It's now between Search and Quick Links.

Wow...

Ok, thanks to those doing the donkey highly specialised admin work.

All looks good. I like the idea of having the option to hide poll results. There's a reason why we have secret ballots and that is to prevent the current state of the poll effecting the outcome. I would think it would have only limited use. Low priority.
