Should we jon the internet blackout to protest SOPA? page 1

Lots of sites are going black including Wikipedia. I pledged a dollar to make them do it. Question is, should we join them? Are we too small? Would anyone notice? Is shutting a forum for one day pointless?

It may be worthwhile just from a personal principle stance, but I've no idea how objectively effective it would be in drawing further attention to the issue.

Is there another way we can show solidarity with them, make our protest heard/seen .. as concerned individuals?

Many a mickle makes a muckle, and all that. If every individual had thought what little effect he/she has as an individual, and sink back into apathy because of this feeling of insignificance, no mass movement of the past that finished up reshaping our social, political and economic environment would have come about. There would have been no vote for women without the suffragettes, no end to segregation without the African-American civil rights movement, no decriminalisation of homosexuality without the gay rights movement, the communist block would still exist, and so on.

Social change is not just engendered by economic change. Individuals combining to pressure for change serve as catalyst for it. Same might go for individual websites. I'm not saying we will succeed, but if we participate we can at least say it was not for the want of us trying to effect change.

"In support of free speech and solidarity with sites who hold that value blah blah etc"?

Seraph, I agree ... many drops make a river ... But I don't think apathy necessarily follows the belief that ones effort is most likely ineffectual.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:SOPA_initiative/Learn_more

The Wikipedia community has blacked out the English version of Wikipedia for 24 hours on January 18th to raise awareness about legislation being proposed by the U.S. Congress — the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the PROTECT IP Act (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PROTECT_IP_Act) (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate -- and to encourage readers to speak out against it. This legislation, if passed, will harm the free and open Internet. If you are in the United States, let your congressional representative know what you think of the proposed legislation by clicking here (http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/SOPA/Blackoutpage).

The blackout will last 24 hours -- from midnight to midnight EST (05:00 UTC Wed to 05:00 UTC Thu).

This decision was made by Wikipedia’s global community of editors -- the people who built Wikipedia. The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that operates Wikipedia, also opposes SOPA and PIPA, and supports the editors' blackout.

SOPA and PIPA are real threats to the free and open Internet. Although recent media reports have suggested that the bills are losing support, they are not dead. On January 17th, SOPA's sponsor said the bill will be discussed and pushed forward in early February. PIPA could be debated in the U.S. Senate as soon as next week. There is a need to send a strong message that bills like SOPA and PIPA must not move forward: they will cause too much damage.

Although the bills have been amended since their introduction, they are still deeply problematic. Among other serious problems in the current draft of the bills, the requirement exists for US-based sites to actively police links to purported infringing sites. These kinds of self-policing activities are non-sustainable for large, global sites - including ones like Wikipedia. The legislative language is ambiguous and overly broad, even though it touches on protected speech. Congress says it's trying to protect the rights of copyright owners, but the "cure" that SOPA and PIPA represent is worse than the disease.

I added a poll and set up a notice at the top of every page with a link to this thread. It's a very short fuse, unfortunately. I think the black-out starts in about 4 hours.

Voted yes. I think it'd be okay if we're a little outside the timeframe.

Mafia would have to be deferred, but I'm okay with that.

ob, maybe post something in the mafia thread now just to let the players know of the possibility?

Just been thinking about this ... question for ob and others who voted in favour ... even if we're the majority in this vote, is it reasonable for us to close the site for 24 hours for ideological reasons when some members are against it? I'm not comfortable doing that.

There's also an irony in it that I don't need to spell out, I'm sure.

I like the idea of a banner. I won't have time to push pixels before the time of the blackout, though. It's almost 2 am my time and I need to get back to sleep.

Maybe someone else can throw together a banner? Or maybe instead of a banner, go with a text notice similar to the notice for this poll?

Change the announcement to something like ..

"Feel free to log out of MindRomp for 24 hours in support of freedom of information on the internet and solidarity with the blackout protest led by Wikipedia and Reddit (link)"

oblivion
18th January 2012, 10:09 AM
I've added a "change the banner" option to the poll. If you have voted already and would like to change your vote, post in this thread and I'll let you know.

Adenosine, you should be able to see an "Edit" link in the top right hand corner of the poll. Click that, and remove 1 vote from the option you voted for and add one vote to the option you prefer.

eta I've changed my vote from "yes" to "banner".

Major sites are blacking out because they will affect many people, world wide, who would otherwise have no idea what SOPA is. The blackout is not a protest so much as it is an information drive. It's not designed to fight Govt., but to motivate the people to voice their opposition.

A blackout on this site would be a like throwing grain of sand at the desert.
