The airline we flew to the East Coast had a 50 lb weight limit on checked baggage. The airline we're flying home has a 40 lb weight limit.

Wear everything that's heavy.

Wear every article of clothing you own at the same time. They won't weigh you.

Yep and make your handbag improbably heavy, too.

Burn everything that doesn't fit.

eta if you have space to fit it, pack some inflated helium balloons. Hydrogen would be better but it would be harder to contain and explosive.

How did you resolve this?

How important can the other part of "we" be anyway?

I think we shoehorned an improbable amount of shit into our carry-ons, backpacks, etc, and wore/carried our heaviest coats instead of packing them. Every plane trip since then has involved an increasing amount of luggage logistics than back in the good old days.

Having accustomed myself to more civilized air travel requirements, I feel your pain. Don't have any suggestions though, except plan to mail stuff.

When I last boarded a plane, my luggage was weighed, and over, but since I was carrying some printed material for Ms. K, the airline didn't bother me about it. The pilot asked about the knife I had strapped to my belt, but only to admire it's heft. He was not at all worried about his safety because he was a hairy-faced old bush pilot who probably had good plans in place to deal with polar bears, or me.

It's a different flying world up here. I dread my next southern flight. I am even trying to talk my sweetheart into driving out next time (around 18 hours) rather than fly.

It depends on the cost of checking a 2nd bag, but it's usually more expensive to mail stuff home than to add a bag. I make sure to be under limits on the going out leg, to save room for acquisitions coming home.

My last trip was fun. I was bringing home some rather heavy keepsakes from grandparents/great grandparents. My carry on rolling bag was extremely heavy, but they don't have to meet weight limits. I had a rolling pin and a stainless steel vintage 1950's orange juicer in it along with some music history books along with lighter weight keepsakes.

The TSA people were mildly amused by the juicer.

As I expected, the flight was very full and they were asking for volunteers to check carry-on bags at the gate.

So, I scored an additional 40 lbs of checked baggage for free.
