Want.
I am a visual person. I respond to avatars and lack of avatars slows down my reading since I have to read the poster's name before each post.
So, yeah.

With regards to the mentioned problem of illegal content in avatars a little admin work could remove them and, if necessary, remove avatar privileges.

If we decide to go the externally hosted route, I found a gravatar mod for vbulletin. I think it allows for both locally hosted and externally hosted avatars, though. I'm not sure if it's possible to restrict avatars to only-gravatar, but it might be.

I've never been clear on why we refuse to host any images (I understand not having the 'upload image' in thread option, but not wrt avatars.)
And yes: choice. So, yes please :)

re refusing to host images ... I understood the concern is mainly to do with the possibility of inadvertantly hosting illegal (and/or unethical?) material?

^ OK that makes sense.. but aren't we then better off hosting avatars, so that we can remove any illegal ones (and I wonder how often that happens anyway) ?

^ That's how I'd like us to approach it.

^ good points. Maybe we are being a little edgy about hosted images. If the problem becomes apparent we have the back up plan to solve it.

I've turned avatars on. The size limit is 140 x 140. Vbulletin will automatically resize a larger image when you save your avatar.

I tried it, too. But I think the deal breaker is the file size, if that is too big, it's not going to resize for you

yeah, there is a file size limit. I'll bump that up a bit.
