Besides looking like they are wearing sumo suits they are capable of a metabolic feat called cryptobiosis. Under cryptobiosis the Tardigrade can slow it's metabolism down to 0.01% of normal. The cryptobiosis is total, anhydrobiosis (water content is 1% of normal; in this condition the Tardigrade can survive for ten years), cryobiosis (temperature drops), osmobiosis (maintains osmotic levels) and anoxybiosis (slows down oxygen requirements).

This enables them to withstand huge pressures, like those in the Mariana Trench. Or, wait for it, no pressure, like in outer space.

In 2007 some Tardigrades were taken into space and exposed to the vacuum for ten days. Back on Earth, and rehydrated, 68% of them survived. Even some, exposed to solar radiation, survived.
