What do I need to work on?
I don't want to rush us but I am getting antsy! I should have some laptop time later today/tomorrow.

I'm antsy too!
Of course, vitally important are the smilies :staregonk: and I'm learning as I go (they are all over the place right now and I haven't gathered the full set, so fear not they will be ordered soonish.)
But seriously, it seems like we are in agreement with everything, except I'm not clear on what the editing stance will be. Are we going for a 2 hr window (with audit log of course) or no edits at all?
I've got two sick kids at home, so haven't had enough 'me' time to spend reading those threads charlou linked to, but what did stand out to me was whether 'out there' images/vids linked should be spoilered by admins, or not. It ties in with whether edits are allowed, because after someone posts something others might request them to spoiler part of their post.

I like the no nonsense approach of the image being spoilered by an admin, no questions asked, no explanation given. It's not like the content is removed.

Yes, I do too. If there's a majority to agree on that... and also to agree on either edit option, then AFAIK we have no areas still to agree upon.

I've been ... distracted ... I had meant to devote some of my time off work to writing up an informative code of practice that set out our core values and responsibilities, to be posted in place of guidelines ... and linked to our sign up check list.
I really hope to get onto this over the next couple of days. If anyone else wants to flesh it out, though, please do. We can all talk about any adjustments or additions, either way.

Something like this Elouise? Very rough, just a first draft.
Mindromp was established with the guiding principle that everyone has a voice and everyone deserves to have their voice heard. Everyone may speak but in speaking everyone takes responsibility for what they say.
Mindromp will give you a place to speak but takes no responsibility for what you say or what is said to you. Mindromp will provide tools to control your own online experience.
Mindromp does not have a hierarchy; administration is a technical role only. All administrative actions are transparent and available for viewing. All reported posts will be dealt with in public. The only exception is personally identifying information and illegal content. Illegal content will not be allowed on the forum. All members are encouraged to report illegal content to the relevant law enforcement authorities.

Perfect...
Mindromp will give you a place to speak but takes no responsibility for what you say or what is said to you. Mindromp will provide tools to control your own online experience.
I would swap "control your own " for "help you manage your" ...
Mindromp does not have a hierarchy; administration is a technical role only.
Do we understand this to be correct.? Admin will be adjudicating on legality and spam.
All administrative actions are transparent and available for viewing. All reported posts will be dealt with in public.
maybe "all admin actions will be transparent" the rest is implied. Although I could go with a more wordy form ...
The only exception is personally identifying information and illegal content. Illegal content will not be allowed on the forum. All members are encouraged to report illegal content to the relevant law enforcement authorities.
There is also spam and that admin will mop up that mess. Otherwise excellent.
This document is a more wordy form of the checklist, which is exactly what it should be.

I've made these changes (but kept the wordy form of the admin actions are transparent piece. I think this is different enough and we want to be held responsible for maintaining this. It's worth making explicit).
I've also changed this to one "question", with one acknowledgement.
I acknowledge that I have read and understood the rules below. If I choose not to click the acknowledged button, I understand that by posting at MindRomp.org I implicitly acknowledge these rules.:I also fixed the code where the word "preceded" was misspelled.

I'd prefer the succinct version in the "force read" thread that Elouise and I worked on to be the items acknowledged by new members. I think there is a place for a more descriptive text, but for the checklist, we have formulated four points that covers everything, (I think).

I am responsible for my posts, interactions and disclosures on this forum
Any requests for admin action will be openly proposed, discussed and decided
Admin action is limited to technical procedures, removing illegal content and spam, deleting spammers and protecting member privacy
Admin action to protect member privacy is limited to the removal of personally identifying information
I'm undecided about the value of multiple acknowledgements being useful. Whatever people think I guess

I think the write up needs to sit prominently under a heading of forum guiding principles or some such. In a way, it can still be a little more descriptive. Something that expands on how the forum has arisen and how the forum "rules" came about.

Although the administrators and moderators of MindRomp Forum will attempt to keep all objectionable messages off this forum, it is impossible for us to review all messages. All messages express the views of the author, and neither the owners of MindRomp Forum, nor vBulletin Solutions, Inc. (developers of vBulletin) will be held responsible for the content of any message.
By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws.
The owners of MindRomp Forum reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread for any reason.
I'd add this bit to our version and turf the rest:
"All messages express the views of the author, and neither the owners of MindRomp Forum, nor vBulletin Solutions, Inc. (developers of vBulletin) will be held responsible for the content of any message.
By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws."
The disclaimer might not have any legal force, but you never know...
Also, I think it may be a good idea to make the core values - combined with the more writeup of our guidelines - a stickied, global announcement so that it is accessible from the top of every subforum with a single click.Oops, just had to edit my above post. See strikeouts.
Also, is there a better expression for 'rules' and 'guidelines'? Can we perhaps subsume the whole lot under the heading 'core values'?

I've had a reread and bolded a couple of points that I think need work.
The first:
"All administrative actions are transparent and available for viewing"
... at first glance looked right, but on further thought it's not quite accurate. Some admin actions will not be available for viewing because they involve technical work that general members just don't have access to. So a reword is needed there, I think.
The second:
"All members are encouraged to report illegal content to the relevant law enforcement authorities."
I think should be changed to
"All members are encouraged to report content considered to be illegal to the admins for removal, and any suspected illegal acitivity to the relevant law enforcement authorities"
... or something like that.
We're close to wrapping up this aspect of the preparation ... I have a good feeling about this.

You have all done an extraordinary job. I can't say how grateful I feel, but I can say now that I am thrilled about the plans that have been hammered out for this incredibly exciting new venture. I

I like this. I think it should be prefaced with something like "This is not a default boilerplate registration agreement. Read it!" in large bold font.
Most people don't read registration agreements, because most sites don't customize the agreements - it's the words vbulletin (or whatever forum software) provide.

The current form of this document looks close to ready to go. Actually I can find no fault myself... And I'm a pedant at the best of times.
Please just try and find loopholes. Imagine the members that join up to test out the "rules". I think we have everything covered... But do you?

I think it's important to accept that at some stage someone will challenge the rules, or perhaps find an inconsistency.
The crucial thing then will be how the forum reacts - hopefully without tutting, exasperation, accusations of drama-queenery and the like. Wouldn't it be nice to allow any member to safely air their concerns without facing buckets of shit being thrown in their faces and having to put up with scorn and even score-settling?
I think that how we as a community deal with such concerns, and the manner in which we allow them to be articulated, is just as important as the core values and responsibilities codified so far.
The core values should be open to debate at all times and by any member, regardless of how long they have been here.
We must protect and cherish our attackers.

Yes. The key is having admins (and early joiners) that are mature enough not to knee-jerk react with defensiveness, counter-attack or any other negativity. Oblivion stands out in this regard; those familiar with her adminning on TR are surely as impressed as I am at how well she responds to any criticism, suggestion or personal attack.

Why not get some new blood in to join in the fun of building our little house? As long as we are happy about the ethos, why not let our friends take part in the excitement?

Yes!
ob, how is the replacement of the sign-up agreement going? We need the new one in place first. I wish I could do more to help with that ... I am going to have to make an effort tackle the ACP ... learn and understand it.

We must protect and cherish our attackers.
DAMN.
I missed most of this, sorry. I've been occupied.
I wanted to say that the discuss forum only needs to be archived when I need to close it/take it offline. I'll let you know if there becomes 'hurry' but no hurry in my future at the moment.
I prefer 'responsibilities' to 'core values' but I think I couldn't do it better than it has been done. Great work folks!
