The Kraut's wheels are bigger.

Not as good as London 2012. That was one moment I'll never forget (not least because it was the moment I realised I was actually enjoying the olympics after all).

I'd never seen this before either. An associate of mine does this for a reason to train all year.

I never want to see it again. Holy shit, is that a real race? I see the strategy, but why the fuck would they allow the design of the race to be balancing on your bike as slow as possible.

Because it's a sprint race, obviously.

In the actual sprinting bit, bike in front is doing most of the work while bike at the rear benefits from being in the slipstream. The slow bit before the sprint is to a) try to make the other racer start sprinting first or b) try to delay the sprint till the last possible moment so that you pass the finish line before you tire and start slowing down.

there's a game theory element to this. Surely if a maverick rider trained hard at actually cycling fast while his competitors focussed their training on the slow-cycling, then that maverick rider could just start pedalling like billy-o from the start. the competitors would tire before the maverick, yes i have this all worked out

No, it doesn't work like that.

You underestimate the effect, im on phone but there is a video of a couple of longboarders on the freeway overtaking semitrucks downhill once they got drag.

well obviously, or we wouldn't see the equilibrium we do

so what you're saying is, if my maverick took off early then the other guy would have a huge energy-saving for ages which would give him the advantage at the end?

i say guy, i assume women don't do this kind of thing

Probably true for mid/long distance running races - or so I used to think. Why can't you just run like feck and be faster than everyone else? At those speeds drag is a small issue but I guess you 'run' into the psychological barriers. Competing with the fastest people in the world and you're out on your own and that slavering pack of bastards can see you and, much like the Nazgûl, will never stop hunting you.

At higher speeds drag does become a serious issue. Horridly complex but at some point drag goes non-linear and is then proportional to velocity squared. At bike racing speeds something like 30% iirc of input energy goes into overcoming air resistance and that's huge. If you can sit in a slipstream and effectively get sucked along by the front guy's turbulence then you have a massive advantage. Bike racing is largely about managing turbulence and drag. Oh, and for sprints huge thighs too.
