Here is the current logo.

We're also going to need a favicon. Any thoughts on something recognizable at 16x16 px? "MR" on a solid background is probably the most legible. Or maybe a stylized M of some sort.

I like his art. The water comes closest to rompy. I think the favicon should be the M from the main logo or maybe the MR.

it's the tiny image representing the website that you see on browser tabs, that help you easily identify the site. They should be kinda striking, like the colorful lower case g for google, and the facebook-font f for facebook, etc.

Will you lazy fuckers please dream out loud here as if I could create your fancy, in photoshop?
I will happily make something up with the colours, shape or other characteristics you think perfect.
For instance, the water one - I am a fair pixel-tech, but don't have 'art'. Someone who knew design/drawing could have finished it much better. (finishing being the placement/size of the drops and the 'bloating' of certain parts of the letters)
Come on and try it out! Dare me - I fucking dare you!

I would prefer to leave the vanilla skin mostly alone for people who are used to it from other sites.
but I don't want it to be our default skin.
What do you think of these TR skins, not so much the specific colors, but the contrasts. These skins do away with the white rectangle, and the dark colors are in place of the grey background in this skin.
Blue-green http://talkrational.org/index.php?styleid=3
shades of grey: http://talkrational.org/index.php?styleid=21
Light on dark: http://talkrational.org/index.php?styleid=18 (this is my "migraine" template)

The TR logo/heading retains good contrast no matter the colour of the background. So I guess cunt's heading ideally needs tweaking so it too retains good contrast.
As an aside, and maybe this is an embodiment of me being an accountant, but I personally like the vanilla skin in comparison to all those skins [and jeebus christ on a xmas candy cane I just burnt my eyes on the bling skin there!!] So you can have different headers for each skin? Maybe that's the answer if we stick with the water heading
Yes I did just admit to that.

Heh I just tried to edit my post, because the "yes I did just admit to that" was in relation to my admission of liking the vanilla skins.
It let me jump through the hoops but then told me I only had 1 minute to edit. With the speed of my internet here, I'd possibly NEVER get an edit in quick enough.
Is there any point to 1 minute?

I had a feeling this one was going to be an issue, especially while we are working on stuff and documenting stuff. For now, I've set the edit window for members to 2 hours for the time being while we figure out what is feasible and what isn't.
I can't restrict admins from being able to edit whenever. There is no way for the system to differentiate between "this edit is necessary" and "this edit is not".

I think nostrum makes a good point about admins having a privilege other members don't have ... I'm okay with the two hour edit window - would prefer the half hour, but the consensus in the Discuss forum poll seemed to be two hours ...
... especially if there's a trail ... there should be a trail regardless who is editing.

so, if a complaint were made about an edit, we would have a look. If the edit looked "bad" - a hostile edit of some sort, we'd post the original? Or post the original in any case, provided the member wasn't removing personal info?
If we have to decide if the original should be revealed, I'm just wondering what the criteria for making the decision should be.

Yes, I was thinking about this too ... And it's a decision we should make and be on the same page about.
This is one reason not allowing editing at all would be good ... (although there'd still be the unavoidable admin unfair advantage over other members) ... but even limiting the edit window to a much smaller time frame would reduce this as an issue.

Admins will just have be disciplined about not editing their own posts outside any agreed window. Breeches will incur physical punishment. I'm happy to be the enforcer.

I can easily l leave the colour out, and get the mercury back.

This may not be a complete list, since I am slurping my first coffee and smoking my first doobie of the year...I may well do another one or two this morning...but I think this is all of my suggestions so far.
Maybe I will make a vote thread a bit later. I WAS forcing oblivion to post them all, but can't remember why...

I like the colour and shape of the second one, and the liquid/metallic look of the first one.

Isn't that the third one? (that's what I was trying there...)

kinda. I can't figure out to say what I am thinking in words. I might give it a try in gimp today or tomorrow.

BTW ob I never thanked you for changing the header background colour to allow the logo to stand out. It looks great. Thanks!

Aye, still number one for me for the reasons I gave. The others don't appeal to me at all by comparison.

I like this significantly better than the current.....I also favor the red one as well.

Thanks, Supernaut. I agree with you, but the tide won out. (I didn't like the first one, which everyone else did lol)
I also noticed that it likely looked like I didn't respond to the real suggestion after asking for it - to do one which looked a bit 'where the wild things are'. I did try...a few times...and got nothing worth posting publicly. I will try to have another go, and we will see.

Out of those choices, the first is the worst imho. #2 is ace.

Actually; can it be dependent on theme? #3, shrunk down to match #2 in size (in other words, #2 given the mercury coloration), might go well with the default theme and #2 as it is now might go well with Wild Rompus (the best theme, which I for one have used since signing up)

#1 looks like someone took #3 and then passed it through some dumb photoshop filter to make it all warbly and magical in a bad way

It can be dependent on theme. On most sites the logo colors or details are dependent on theme.
btw did you guys notice that I've been messing with the wild rompus theme? I've added a dark rompus, too, but am still tweaking it.
