I love wine. Moving to California where I can tour wineries in my spare time was one of the best decisions I've ever made. :D

I picked up some Knob Creek Bourbon earlier today. I can spring for top drawer now and again, but mostly stick with the midrange bourbons when I hit the hard stuff.

Blantons is truly amazing, though.

True story - I had a bottle of Jack Daniel's Honey Bourbon in my hand earlier today. I decided to go with the knob Creek.

I love wine. Moving to California where I can tour wineries in my spare time was one of the best decisions I've ever made. :DCool. We live within two and three hours' drive to Australia's premier vineyards. The cellar door sales are a real trap. After a tasting you usually finish up buying a dozen or two bottles, only to proceed to the next one and repeat the process. Here is a photo of one of Yaldara's smaller cellars, which is one of the wineries we visited last year.

http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x59/Hermit_graphics/Happy%20Snaps/ff9fb55c.jpg

Even though I am not really a port drinker, (I tend to list to starboard after the third bottle,) we finished up with quite a collection of the fortified product as well. My preference is for dry reds. Mostly of the Cabernet-Sauvignon variety, which is similar to Claret. What is your preferred style?

24th December 2011, 11:05 AM
I enjoy a variety of drinks (might be my Irish heritage), Guinness, lagers, ales, red wine (richer the better), white wine (dry for preference), several spirits and liquers including Irish whiskey, advocat, brandy, Cointreau, Baileys, Kahlua, vodka and bourbon. All depends on how I feel at the time.

I'm really looking forward to going to Europe and tasting some real Burgundys and German beer next year.

I like red wines, too. cabernet, merlot, carmenere. I don't generally like zinfandels, but make an exception for some old-vine zins.

I have been enjoying Baileys Irish Cream - but I have been at work, and that is as drunk as we are allowed to be.

Now that I am off duty, my plans include Tankarey Tanquerey Gin.

And rum, and vodka...oh, and Courvassier VSOP has made it to my favourites list now.

I like wines, but something about them makes me forget which ones I liked. I tried having a log, but lost it...

Is it my imagination, or has anyone else experienced a subjective difference in the "quality" of intoxication between, say beer, wine and hard spirits? I do, but since ethanol is ethanol, I'm wondering why this is. Given equivalent quantities of alcohol consumed over, say, one hour, wine mellows me, hard liquors cheer me up and beer does neither except make me stagger and feel dull. Possible explanations are: the number of beers needed to equal one shot of hard liquor (feeling of fullness); sugar content; allergic or other physiological effects of hops, tannins, etc.; the extent to which my mood might influence my choice of drinks, and maybe even some kind of social stereotype at work (e.g., beer=boisterous; wine=sophisticated; whiskey shots=cowboy; Piña Colada=Mexican cruise). Don't ask me to find a peer-reviewed journal article on this; I'm just wondering.

I liked it anyway. It fails my usual test (the 'do I want to drink another bottle?' test) but stands well, though it only has one leg.

(I may have learned to make a wine-lingo joke there, but with devogue gone, it's hard to be sure...)

Now I am on a delicious mug of earl gray with honey. Always a winner for me :)

because you need a proper china tea pot for loose leaf tea, plus flowered tea cosy, china cup, fruited scones with jam and clotted cream. If you can't be bothered with all that - bags are the way to go.
