The Announcement page 1

So how do we advertise the forum when the time comes?
I've put the tiniest kernel in to the minds of Ratz with my last post there bumping the "New Forum" thread (and who wouldn't want the presence of the delightful Hades?)...
I reckon just a few well placed PMs to spread the word, rather than a forum wide announcement. Such blatant spam would be quite disrespectful to many people who have worked hard building Rationalia - I think it would be wrong for one of us to post an invitation thread.

I don't know all the history of the place, but from my POV charlou got pushed out rather brutally (I know the general response to that would be that she went of her own volition.)
So I'd advise against a big announcement only because the first person to sign up would be gawdzilla to trollspam the place to prove how he was right and charlou was wrong.
PM the people who we think would help bed in the forum in the right spirit, I'm thinking.

yeah, I think establishing the spirit and ethos from the start will be key.

I don't think zilla would do that, actually. rationalia is his home, as it is for many there .. I think they will appreciate what we're trying to do here ... or at least understand that our motive is to create a forum in a style that better suits our philosophy.
I've mentioned it to Pappa and know that he wishes us all the best.
I also suspect others are aware of this forum and have been looking in on the Discuss forum. A thread by TA in the pub looked to be taking the typical ratz piss about us deciding on a name for the new forum ... :D
I had planned to make a friendly explanation of what we're about and extend an open invitation to the ratz. When we're ready, of course.
It was tempting to post something in dev's "New Forum" thread over there, but it's too early ... We've still got things to sort out.

It was when I saw that thread that I decided to make registrations at the Discuss forum by admin approval ..
I have to say, I appreciate that no-one tried to sign up and stir things up while the opportunity was there. They are good people. :)

I think I would tell Pappa about this new forum, how it came to be, how I fell out of love with Rationalia, and ask him what kind of announcement he would think of as neighbourly.
I don't like PM's in general, though, and I admit it might draw in Gawdzilla, but frankly, he doesn't bother me. He has no power over me. I actually like the guy, and would welcome him.
What I don't like about him is how his attitude pairs with real or perceived authority. That won't be a problem here. Folks can say what they want to him, with NO chance of sanction.

Either that or just ignore him. Personal responsibility can take several forms.

Mind you, I find it more difficult to ignore that kind of behaviour towards others, than towards myself.
So, yeah ... He'll be no more or less protected here than anyone else .. there's no ultimate authority anyone can appeal to but their own.

How much of what he does is based on his or aayan's "authority"? to me he was just trolling. Was he protected from people reacting to his trolling? When there is no rule against trolling and no rule against insulting a troll, you get a different breed of troll from the sort who gets other people to step over the lines.

haha that was quick! I found an add on to a quiz app that requires a passing score before you can post in the specified forum(s). We'd have to specify ALL forums, but that's doable.
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=93388
The only issue is that this add on and the original quizz app are for an older version of vbulletin. It doesn't look like there's one available for 3.7 or 3.8. So, I'm not sure I can get it working for us. I'll see if I can find something more up to date before I try installing this.

I found a more up to date quiz app. I'm installing it. It may not be what we need. the quickest way to figure that out is to install it and see what it does.

Yes, you just hit the nail on the head. I like the guy, too, when he's not doing that. I even asked him nicely to stop...

I agree that consulting with Pappa is the way to go. I got the real sense that he was trying to keep Ratz together, dysfunction and all, during The Troubles.

I think the Ratz annoucement should be carefully managed and not underhand in any way. Any sneakiness perceived would reflect badly.
The whole feel could be :
Mindromp.org is not in competition with Ratz. We just wanted to see how our ideas could be applied to a real forum, rather than blathering on about it constantly. It was probably wrong to impose our values on the Ratz community. All are welcome at mindromp.org. Bring a towel.
The rest of the world is another matter...

I agree. Except for the struck out part. I don't see it as an imposition. We have values, we espoused values and when push came to shove we were forced to see how our values aligned with the rest of Ratz. They aligned with nearly 40% but by no means all. But at no time did we impose our values on Ratz. I agree with the rest though.

Actually, you're right. It was never about "our" values. I didn't have any idea of any of your (collective) values until the issues were raised. We are here because the issue was forced and we are trying something different in line with a set of values we can agree with.
That feels pretty good actually.

I was pleasantly surprised to find so many like-minded people and feel honoured that you invited me to help make Mindromp. Thank you.
