...tell on someone whom you knew for sure was cheating on a test in school?

Scenario: You are still in school (this might stretch some people's memories a bit) and you notice that the someone near you is cheating.

So do you tell on them? Or do you keep silent?

This question came up on an Ethics exam, lol.

The short answer is I wouldn't tell.

1) it's not my business
2) it'll cause me time and effort, distracting me from my own exam performance
3) i have neither the time nor the inclination to second and third guess the infinite consequences of a student cheating in an exam

Yeah I wouldn't tell on them. But if they were being blatant and an invigilator was nearby and caught my gaze I might duck my head toward the student so they might be caught in the act.

OTOH .. if another student noticed the cheating and wanted to pipe up, I'd have no issue, either. At the very least, just noticing someone cheating can distract a person enough to have an effect on their own test result.

Do I care enough about them as a person?

If no, then yes. If yes, then yes.

If I care about them, then I want them to advance honestly. If I don't, then I want to amuse myself.

I would not cheat on a academic test, myself.

But, no. I have few ethical standards for other people. In fact, I rather encourage being naughty as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. I live to offend the corrupt establishments, fuck them and fuck their attempts at authority. I'm sure my opinion would be very different if I were teaching a class, though. :3

If I'm paying enough attention to my neighbours to recognize that they're cheating, I'm suspect too. Eyes on your own page and all that.

Yes I would tell on them if we were being graded on a curve and by them cheating it would affect the grades of the rest of the class.

Otherwise I would probably just make a casual comment to them that I knew they cheated. Cheating mostly hurts the person doing the cheating, and I'm not doing them a favor if I look the other way - so my mentioning it might give them pause to think about what they're doing.

Is it an exam to be certified to practice medicine? Yes. Is it undergrad or grade school? Fuck no.
