Hello nice people :awesome:

I am currently living in a nice apartment complex on the outskirts of Auckland, New Zealand. I sell wine, I have a nice car and some money to spend. We have a private pool and tennis court at the complex. Mrs Dev and I separated in 2013 and my partner now is a former Masterchef winner.

I've been so busy scoffing Michelin standard food I have had little time to post, but after quitting Facebook I have found a few extra minutes each day.

Hope you are all well x

Hi Dev! How does NZ compare, lifestyle-wise, to the olde country?

Imagine a long summer of 25c days, gorgeous breezes wafting from the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea, all of nature's bounty: the freshest of fruit, the sweetest of corn, magnificent wines from vineyards nearby, sunshine, sand, long, lazy days, thrilling nights, so many wonderful people.

Ireland is Yoda's swamp home world.

I went back on holiday last year after four years away. It was nice to see everyone but there was a lack of energy, understandable defeatism. I was shocked by how far things had gone even since I had left. It was outrageously beautiful in ways I had never noticed before, but nothing like NZ.

No, the circular tank full of shit and other waste where an arm is constantly stirring it is called an agitator and the tank an agitated tank.

I don't understand the whole process, but I do know the terms used in Australia.

It's something called fan vaulting and we've looked at it before in the old school thread (http://mindromp.org/forum/showpost.php?p=81427&postcount=22). It's usually on the high ceiling of the nave and often 'simple' and geometric. In Gloucester they use it in a particularly flamboyant organic form in cloisters where it's brought down to human scale and it is indeed like walking through some exuberant and baroque petrified forest.

Well that is the difference between a discussion and an argument, how able the participants are to deal with new information.

And even the most diligent person can trip over their own conformation bias.

Also, you have to add that some ideas people hold on to are because it is part of a larger worldview that they have to protect because it is tied up with how they identify themselves.

This is why I mostly quit discussing/arguing things on the internet.

PS. The world is not flat.

Jerome, my dad worked for NASA. You will never convince me the earth is flat or we faked the moon landing. It is part of my identity as the Daughter of a Rocket Scientist.

But riddle me this Batman:

Now if you sail out of Miami at dusk, with the sun setting behind you, you will see it set, and then you will see the glow of the lights of Miami, almost like a second sun. The farther you go, the more the lights also seem to "set" or sink into the ocean.

Keep going directly east and eventually you will no longer see any glow at all behind you. Break out your telescope, aim it west, and you will still not see the lights of Miami. Why is that?

Are the street lights getting shorter in the distance? Nope, they are the same height as the ones near to the photographer, just like the sun, but they look like they are 'setting' over the horizon.

My only current cameras are my phone and a GoPro. Neither of which have any kind of zoom lens. I don't really want a DSLR as I'll never carry it with me, but I could see carrying one of these (or at least keeping it in my car) so it could be ready on short notice.

27th November 2016, 10:02 PM
Never used one but I know they turn out good results. You can get various third party or proprietary clip on fixed focal length lenses for wide angle and short telephoto and they're surprisingly good. Some of the zoom attachments are pretty chunky but consequently capable. None of that tech is to be sneezed at and if you're not after billboard sized blowups I'm sure you'll be more than happy with the results.

One of my partners pet theories is that he is a Nebelung! Seems to fit the description in terms of appearance + behavior, and is also slightly hypoallergenic (Partner is allergic to cats but seems to be fine with him).

He was a stray that my office mates mother took in, but she couldn't keep him, so I adopted him. I wouldn't be surprised if he's some fancy pure-bred, given that rich assholes who go to breeders are probably above average likely to abandon their pets. (can you tell I have opinions about breeders?)

if you had to make love to the characters in that photo, in which order would you do them

1. squeezebox mcgenderquestions
2. hope this flat cap distracts from my staring at that woman's tits
3. unconvincing vicar disguise
4. attention seeking woman
5. shortsighted man concerned about hairloss
6. simpleton with shiny dots on hand

I agree with all of these descriptions.

I think I'd do the unvicar first.

not sure why it came out so small.

here's a larger version.

That's some hefty barrel distortion at the top of the frame there and can be used to good effect if you like that kind of thing.

wide angle lens on the phonecam.

That lens flare is pretty much unavoidable if you point a wide angle lens anywhere with the sun in front. Very expensive lenses with quality multicoating on all lens element glass/air interfaces will minimise it but still. Shoving extra elements like filters or your clip-on wide attachment will always exacerbate the problem. It can look good in some situations but to get rid of it you either need a lens hood - which isn't an option for phone cam - or just shade the lens from direct oblique sunlight with one hand while shooting. Not always possible of course with ultra-wides without including the shading hand in the frame - which you can still do and crop it out afterwards but then there ain't much point to using the wide in the first place.

I've noticed that the lens seems to amp up the yellow/green regardless of what direction it's pointed or where the sun is.

Clip-on is maybe absorbing at the red/violet end of the spectrum which makes it look like it's amping up the colours on the opposite side of the colour wheel (http://www.classicshades.com/classicshades/assets/Image/articles/color-wheel.png). You can perhaps correct for that in-camera depending on the model but a lot of fiddly hassle which would need redoing and undoing and every time you use the attachment. I'd do it later in software post-process if the shot was otherwise good enough to warrant the effort.

It certainly looks like it's considerably boosting contrast and colour saturation as well which may account for the apparent yellow/green enhancement. Be interesting to take with and without shots of a colour wheel.

I'm on my way to the Arctic Circle later today. I'll mess around a bit with the lenses there.

I'm pretty close to thinking this is a waste of time, but we'll see!

The lenses are motivating me to get out the dslr camera and drag it along with me more often, though.

Obviously I didn't let the autofocus do it's job on the house, and the moon is too fucking far away for this cheapo thing. The lens I have is not zoomable, but it's small enough to carry in your pocket. I'll probably keep it in my car so when I want it it will be semi-accessible. I'd like something that I can actually adjust the zoom. On a scale of 1-10 I'll give it a B-.

Hmm, on 2nd thought maybe move it down to a C+. I blame myself for the shitty focus on the house, but the sunset/chemtrail pic is better without the zoom, and it was essentially useless on the moon. Haven't yet tried super closeup stuff like a flower or a bug.

Couple of things to bear in mind with telephoto attachments and telephoto lenses in general is that they reduce the depth of field so that there's a narrower zone where things are in focus and also they increase the risk of camera shake blurring the shot because of the magnification. Some high-end phone cams have image stabilisation but most don't and mostly they don't really need it because of the fairly wide angle lenses they generally have.

So when using a telephoto attachment you should make sure the camera is extra steady and vibration free by whatever means and be more aware of where you set the focus point.

For an experiment I'd set the phone in some rigid way and do shots of a subject with and without attachment. Then crop the 'without' shot to the same framing as the 'with' shot. If there's no difference in quality between the two resulting images or the cropped shot is superior then the telephoto attachment is a total waste of diesel.

I finally had to upgrade my ancient Berry and now have a Huawei P9. It has a pretty swanky camera setup with twin 12 megapixel 'Leica' lenses. One of them does colour and the other high resolution black and white and it combines the two images to give good results. Great stuff and everything but I'm sort of like like Lance Armstrong. No, not on drugs but as he titled his autobiography, "it's not about the bike". The camera is so posh and accurate it's a bit embarrassing and soulless.
