Anyone else do visual art? Photography? Painting? Computer graphics? Sculpture? It would be cool if this was a collection of people's art.
Also, it would be cool if we had a writing thread. I won't start one, but I could be convinced to participate a bit if it was out there...

Good thread idea, and very nice work, eric ... How did you create it? (I have no knowledge of computer art)
I use a program called SAI, which is a painting program. I have a Wacom tablet that I use with it.
I have different methods I use. Depends on my mood. Usually, I make a sketch in one layer, and then color in another layer behind the sketch layer. Then I remove the sketch layer and refine the colored layer with details until I'm done. The blue chick is a one layer quickie, though. One hour total, and it is not even the picture I started out with. Probably only 30 minutes spent on what you see.

Well, that leaves me triple impressed! I got a wacom tablet for my birthday and I have CS5 but I just don't have artistic talent at all. Even after you described a way to do something, I still wouldn't have a clue!

Eric, I have no experience with computer painting, so I'm coming at this from a strictly 'old media' pov.
Have you any experience with artist quality chalk pastels? If you are able to use your software to mimic the effect of chalk pastels, which this painting does to a degree*, give it a try. I think it might enhance what you have going on there.
*It looks like a highly polished example of pastel work, but appears a little too slick to quite fool the eye. Go look at some examples, you'll see what I mean - preferably in real life.

I used to use pastels all the time. SAI can mimic pastels very well, actually, I just never use that brush. My default setup when I work is a no thrills set of brushes and my choice of color palette. I wasn't sure where I was going with this when I started, so I didn't think about going the pastel route. You are right, though. That would have been nice.

I do traditional drawing too, but on a tablet, heh. It is practically the same thing if you are set up right, just no paper, no smearing, no pencil sharpening.
This one I did (quite a while back) as if I had no other tools. Just a 'pencil' brush.

It's funny you say my stuff has personality, considering I almost always remove any possible indication of emotion. Not sure why. Maybe it is a deep psychological thing. :dunno:

If I can find somewhere to upload some pics where my slow connection doesn't prevent it, I will show you some of my 'old media' work.
Any suggestions? I've tried photobucket and flickr and a couple others I can't recall the names of with no luck. Using Vista, if that makes a diff.
Oddly, I can upload pics to one of the avatar making sites and also pre-smallified pics to make my forum avatars.

Hahaha, um... I upload mine to my facebook page. Quality takes a hit sometimes. I resize everything to 700 x <700 so it posts well and uploads reasonably. As far as a slow connection, I dunno. I've had a top-notch connection for years.

Awesome pictures.
Aden - yours was pretty cool!
Tardigrade - you should try and get your tablet back in order, what you did was very nice.
Eric - I especially love that recent colourful one you did as well. It's pretty amazing. All of your stuff.
I usually do little black and white doodles, if I ever do get around to anything. Just black ink pen on paper. All my drawings were ruined in a bit of a flooding incident though. (I was storing them in an old fish tank in the closet, into which a leaking pipe was situated just over the tank. I found the tank filled right to the top with water, and all my stuff was destroyed.... :[)
If I get around to any more, I'll scan them and post.

Tip: use watercolour paper and permanent India ink. The ink is beautiful, the paper can stand being wet and reflattened, the ink stays. Unless the water that gets on it is disgusting and leaves stains, of course.

Heart breaking is the best way to describe it.... I was devastated. The drawings weren't all that great, but there were journals, photos, yearbooks. I just remember pulling them out, sopping wet and lining everything all along the bathtub... trying not to be too upset about it. A tap got hit in the closet which caused the pipe to turn on.
Here's something i did last night, just for fun. I have no techniques or anything, mostly just fool around, and I fucked up so had to add spectacles to the thing..

Working with a canvas of steel, and brushes of plasma, electricity, aluminum oxide and finished off with a can of high-heat enamel, this piece is currently heating a tent at 62.33554 latitude, -114.46129 longitude

This last piece was scrap steel treated with plasma, electricity and aluminum oxide and it holds up my pants.

That's heartbreaking!

I've been working this last year on learning to do decent amateur landscape and wildlife photography. Really want to be able to capture the beauty of what I see in my everyday life. I've gotten to be halfway decent at taking photos of things, but taking photos that are also art, not so much. I've gotten a handful that I think actually come close to catching something. They look better full res but my connection is pretty slow so here's the facebook versions:

I've got a Canon Rebel with a lowish-end 255 mm zoom lens as my biggest glass so I kinda have to work for decent image quality. Gotta get up closer to stuff than some of the critters would like, too. I've thought about investing in something fancier, but then I'd just be afraid to take it out with me, probably.

You should go to the top of that mountain. In Skyrim if you go to the top of the Throat of the World you get a pickaxe from Minecraft. So who knows what kind of treasure is up there waiting for you to go get it!

I really like that, Eric.
Reminds me specifically of a gull skull I once owned. I may still have it somewhere in a box. I had painted it with a thin mix of purple and black inks mixed with powdered mica and a bit of clear acrylic. Was during my messing with found animal skulls period. I actually sold one to an interior decorator - it was a sea smoothed and bleached cow skull with attached sweeps of pale blue and white mussel shells and pale brown and white large wing feathers from geese and turkeys.

I actually sold one to an interior decorator - it was a sea smoothed and bleached cow skull with attached sweeps of pale blue and white mussel shells and pale brown and white large wing feathers from geese and turkeys.

That sounds really cool! No pictures?
I used to have a small collection of bird and rodent skulls as references, but eventually I didn't want to carry around a box of skulls each time I moved. I had a cow skull once, too, but it wasn't in any condition to use as part of a work. I wouldn't have thought to use it for any artsy reason at the time anyway.

No pics. I didn't even own a camera then, which would be early eighties. I've a fascination with animals skulls after they've been subjected to sun and salt water bleaching. I found almost all of them in the rocky upper reaches of local beaches over years. They are good for references but they also have a clean curves and lines aesthetic that lends itself well to various kinds of decoration.
Also worked with sculpted leather quite a bit, it's a neat medium using vegetable tanned leather which holds whatever shape you mold it into while wet. I sold probably a couple hundred sculpted, acrylic-painted decorated leather masks over several years, and quite a few sculpted fish and other critters as well. No pics of them either. :(

I have a collection of animal skulls. I still collect them; whole skeletons or parts of skeletons, feathers, teeth and claws too when I can.
Mink skull. Hangs off the tapestry rod over my bed. It wasn't really intended to have a purpose.
Images are slightly larger than actual size of skull.

Misc large ungulate skulls (moose, elk, deer, cow)
I did not paint the flower on the horned cow skull. I plan to sand it off.

I saw a skull--human--encrusted with turquoise and was so enamored I wanted to do something like that. I haven't yet but I do have skulls in case I ever get that much turquoise or some other suitable stone.
Thank you.

That's one of my favourite stones. Do you not have many shops around to find it? I think I'm lucky because of all the bead shops around that sell it for very inexpensive. I could send you some! (honestly).
also, how would you encrust it within the skull?

We have no shops, I buy most things online.
My go to place for semi-precious has been Fire Mountain gems or eBay.
Depending on the size of the skull, I would need a few pounds of freeform cabochons, different sizes.
I'd glue them using construction cement or some kind of jewelry or model cement. It would be nice if some had holes so they could be wired on with a bead. Might have to grout it too. I wouldn't know until it was done.
I have a bunch of lapidary slabs of different semi-precious minerals, but they need to be cut and I'm not equipped to do that.

I think your idea sounds cool. As for the cutting of the stones, how would you go about that?? I keep picturing taking a chain saw to it, or something like that.
The price here for a piece (looking better than the ones in the earrings, are about 2 dollars for a 2 x 2 inch piece).

Think more of a grinder and buffer. That is what is really happening when someone refers to 'cutting' diamonds.

Many stones can be ground and shaped using a Dremel type tool and appropriate accessories. I've actually used my glass grinder to do a little rough shaping on softer stones, then polished with fine grades of emery paper and jewelers rouge.

My favourite stone is Labradorite. And I currently don't have any because I made something with my very last piece and gave it to someone as a gift.

The cape(?) collar concept is unique, rising from the shoulders like that, it has a similar effect to an elizabethan ruff, but in the negative. I like it.
I need to change a few things, still.
In my mind's eye, I see more draping fabric around her head. The mask should look more like it is seated in a pile of fabric. There will also be the material from proper dress flowing out from the cape-like thing, including two long strips with markings on them.

I have a few watercolors that i would like to submit.
Anyone over at FF has probably already seen them but here goes.
http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/gallery/files/4/5/3/0/ligeia.jpg
This was supposed to be the cover for a now defunct publication Macabre Cadaver, a Horror/Sci-Fi mag. It's a visual interpretation of the final passages of Edgar Allen Poe's Ligeia.
http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/gallery/files/4/5/3/0/nullifidian_s_painting.jpg
This work was a Secret Santa gift to a friend at FF. All of the elements are personal to him. Loves Melville, a pianist, whips my ass at correspondence chess regularly...good times.
The next two are from an older series of works.

I haven't done personal work in a long time. This was fun to do while I had insomnia.
Rud, you just need something good to build around and endless tweaking time. I painted a face and just kept adding things, It helps if you never erase (or only 'erase' as a tool to draw features). At one point, the character had a cloak. You can still see some of it in the frilly neck things.

Rud, I draw for (at least) 7 hours straight, three days a week.
If you did that, you WOULD be able to throw together a picture on par with the one I posted.
I work similarly at playing my keyboard. If I spend more time on my tablet, my art gets better and my music suffers. If I spend more time on my keyboard, my music gets better and my art suffers.
To any task, there a few basic rules to learn, then it is all practice and experimentation.
I've had several people ask me if I would like to set up an art class, and I am tempted to do so for a little bit of extra monies, but even more for the satisfaction of showing people that anyone can do this.

It will never happen I could look at something for a thousand hours and never be able to see how to translate it into a 2d rendition. My eye/brain doesn't function like that. Some people have natural ability and some people can work at it and some people have an art disability. It's like not liking bacon though, people who love bacon can't fathom it and think you are trolling. :uhhuh:

I agree with eric, and I have taught adults how to at least begin to think visually, which is the basic ingredient. It's a mode of thinking first and after that it is just learning technique and practicing.
Rud, I doubt that your eye/brain cannot function that way; it's that you've never used it in that way, or learned to use it that way.
I had very poor math instruction in school and gave up on it early. Mathematics is another mode of thinking. On rare occasions I catch a glimpse of what it is like to think that way, and realise that I could certainly learn that mode if I really wanted to and found an adequate teacher

What's the story with that project you were working on?
The kickstarter launched a few weeks ago. Our goal is $400,000. We are currently just above $200,000. But we are trending less than $10,000 a day, so it doesn't look like it is going to make it.
I have enough problems with the studio owner and his mishandling of everything (part of the reason for the failing kickstarter, I think) that I will throw in the towel if the kickstarter fails.
Basically, the game designers launched the kickstarter with a terrible video and the worst artwork that had been produced by that time. The studio owner held back the good artwork for the game, which is/was incredibly stupid because we NEED people to want to contribute to fund the project in the first place. A lot of people are not going to revisit the kickstarter page when they already know they aren't interested in the direction of the game... You sell the game with everything you have, all the best stuff, then try to make everything else live up to that standard.
The artwork does not accurately sell what the game would actually be.
It's a mess. But here it is.

Haha, the main reason is because the reference photo used had a happy expression. I'm so particular about my stuff being as original as possible that I don't even like to accurately recreate a reference.
It is easy to put a filter over a picture and call it a painting. Photoshop is really good at that now. It will LOOK like it was painted. I have to make my stuff very different so that I can be confident that no one would think that I pulled those kinds of tricks, because I see it ALL THE TIME on places like deviantArt.
The face turned out so good that I was even more worried that someone would think that I used a filter, so I changed almost everything.
Funny thing is I don't even have a working version of photoshop anymore.

how's the career path going eric?
For the past month, I've made more on concept design than my day job. And the work I am doing currently is fun and in-line with what I want to do, specifically. So, I suppose it's going pretty well!
But I need a guaranteed gig before I can quit my day job. And I want to be making nearly twice as much as I am currently making. And I want to work away from the distractions at home.
It's on its way, though. :joy:

Haha! I'm not greedy. I can't build a future on what I am currently making. At this rate, I might be able to afford a house in 30 years, provided I never have a kid.
Twice as much would be a modest living I would be happy with. I'd be able to buy the things everyone should have with enough time left in life to actually enjoy them.

I don't have a lot of advice. Here are a couple things that might help.
I use a program called Paint Tool SAI (I also have photoshop for finishing things, filters, color correction, etc). It is more intuitive than other art programs, and it lacks the the issues with bloat that Adobe Photoshop has. However, Adobe has a subscription based business model now, and that COULD be beneficial for you if you don't know if your daughter will stay interested very long. It's about $21 USD a month for a subscription. Paint Tool SAI is approximately a one time $50 or $60 USD for the full program.
I use a Wacom Intuos 4 tablet. If you were to buy a professional one now, I would go with the Intuos Pro in the medium size. $349 USD, but totally worth it.
If you are not at all sure that your daughter will stay interested and you don't want to waste your monies, you could go with GIMP (free) and a cheaper tablet, like a Wacom Bamboo, but to really love the digital painting experience, you kind of need to pay for a good tablet and decent program. Also, tutorials are your friend, and, again, Paint Tool SAI has the added benefit of being more intuitive than other programs tend to be.
When your daughter makes freehand artwork, what does she tend to do/draw/paint?

That's a lot of very useful information thanks. She's just gone 16 and used to do pretty good freehand drawing and a bit of painting but over recent years she's dropped out of doing it much, what with the usual distractions and all. I'd like to refire her imagination and thought digital may be a way to make a start. Yeah, you're absolutely right and don't want to spend a mint to find she doesn't really like it, but then again, I'd probably find good use for a modest tablet even if she doesn't.

You do photography, yes? Photoshop could be a useful tool for yourself as well as an art program for her, but tutorials will almost certainly be necessary to keep away early frustrations. If she doesn't already know, the best way to get familiar is to simply PLAY.
Remember, a smaller tablet means small motions have big consequences. A bigger tablet will make it easier to control your lines, but you will have to get accustomed to making larger sweeping motions for lines. This isn't bad, but could feel less recreational and more work. A medium-sized tablet is nice and I recommend that size.
I have more tips if you get further along with this endeavor.

Oh, and Paint Tool SAI and Photoshop have different purposes, in a way. Paint Tool SAI is strictly a digital painting program. Photoshop tries to be everything. So if you want to use something for your photographs, SAI is not really the program for you. SAI is also Japanese, and the translations are a bit funny at times.

You've drawn this character before? She looks familiar.
I really like the way the presumably organic elements (like her facial skin) have a flawless, machined look.

There are more than a few things I want to change about it, but maybe some other time. The bottom part didn't work out so well, either. I think it will become a nice character eventually, though.
I spent about an hour... maaaaybe an hour and a half on it, and that is all I really want to spend on distractions at the moment. I'm trying to keep a schedule with my contract work, now.
