Ahh...what's spam-level?
Is that something that we know it when we see it?
Can we arbitary about when to give a spammer the boot?
Spammers will come. Spammers will test the limits.
We'd better know what the limits are.

spam level.
there was a guy who was posting off topic crap in threads at a prodigious rate at TR a while back. On a good day he could hit 200 posts easy. He'd post the same youtube or image macro in a bunch of threads. Once in a while, he would post on-topic too. basically no consideration at all for others trying to use the forum.
Anyway, our definition of spam didn't really fit what he was doing. We wound up expanding the definition.
He came back a year or so later and proceeded to do the same thing. This time we tried a technical solution - a new post/thread throttle. We restricted him to 50 posts a day. He was deeply offended and angry, and did his best to disrupt the site and piss people off with 50 posts per day.
I think it would have been better to just either let him do his worst or to suspend him.
I don't know if he would have pissed off people at ratz to the same degree, but he's left a trail of bans behind him. The Dagda/Sidhe. I wonder if he ever visited ratz.

The type of spammer you describe can be placed on "ignore", oblivion.
Commercial/link and profile spammers can just be deleted from membership, or banned and any links removed from their posts.
Sock puppets ... they're okay with me ... I know googlebot may want to join us at some point ..
Sock puppets should be kept in a group that doesn't allow them to vote in polls, though.

Ignore works to an extent. You'll see how it impacts things like search and thread listings if we ever get someone with that kind of post output.
Ignore worked well enough for me, personally. not for a lot of people.

I don't know if he would have pissed off people at ratz to the same degree, but he's left a trail of bans behind him. The Dagda/Sidhe. I wonder if he ever visited ratz.He joined Rationalia as Aos Si. Initially, his posts were a little edgy, but otherwise unremarkable, but quickly got more aggressive and crassly abusive. In the end it only took him one venomous post to get his third suspension, which was for three months. That was last June, and he has not returned just yet. He did last over 600 posts. At Freethought he clocked up 1800 posts as Sidhe before joining the very small, select group of banned members. His pattern there was similar as at Rationalia; his abusive style kept escalating until it became intolerable. At FF it culminated in a lengthy death threat.
I feel sorry for people like him. They are clearly in need of medical treatment. They are also the kind that will test a lot of members' resolve not to moderate the forum. It's well and good to have the ignore feature, but as the membership grows, there will be a significant number who can't not look, who can't not reply and who consequently make it next to impossible to quarantine the effluent of posters like Sidhe by means of putting them on ignore. It is for this reason I reluctantly support some sort of moderation.

yeah, at FF, most of the regulars put him on ignore. He started piles of threads all with the content (from the movie Brazil). The result for people who had him on ignore was empty thread listings in a couple of forums. All or most of page one in those forums were his posts, and they simply didn't show up. Similar effect in new posts/today's posts search results.
Not the end of the world, but I think people found it extremely annoying that the footprint of the ignored person was that big and still had effect on their minute-by-minute forum experience.
I put Schneibster on ignore at ratz after he called me a liar. The effect of having him on ignore was pretty amazing in some threads.

^hehehe I have gawdzilla on ignore at ratz, after he told me for the second time that if I didn't like his bullying trolling, to just ignore him (I took his advice.) The effect is amazing, in that in many threads I can see where he posted, but no one responds to him or quotes him, so I can't be missing too much.

It is for this reason I reluctantly support some sort of moderation.Do you think we should reassess that aspect of our core values? No moderation except for removing spam, personally sensitive information and illegal stuff is the core value of this forum. "Reassessing" that would amount to depriving its existence of its raison d'être. So, not only do I reluctantly support some sort of moderation, but I now regret having said that at all.
I have briefly sketched out some prognostication of what in my opinion will happen some time in the future, and came to what appears to me an unfortunate conclusion. The most unfortunate aspect is to me some kind of Hobson's choice: either reassess the absolutely no moderation (keeping in mind the abovementioned exceptions) principle, or be resigned to eventually being swamped by individuals who post their effluence here because they can and because they are banned everywhere else and having other members leave for forums where they don't have to put up with such shit because they are incapable of ignoring someone or the ignore button does not do the job for them. Neither option is satisfactory at all. The third one, which is for everybody to simply ignore posts and posters they object to, or retain some semblance of equanimity by any other means they deem fit, is in my view not going to work if this forum ever grows to the size of, say, the Freethought Forum or Talk Rational.

Swamped? Effluence? These are the words that appeal to forum nannies. Please don't bring them into this.

I want us to be something more than "not ratz" or "not ratskep" or "not TR". To me, one of the fascinating things about message boards is the abiity for a group of people to experiment with a forum design, target content, target audience, and a set of core values and see where it takes you. To a large extent it is the initial influx of members who will set the tone. We know that the first month or two will be key to how things develop. If we can get through that without needing or wanting to expand the rule set I'll be surprised if it seems necessary or attractive anytime soon after that.

sorry...I kinda went off on a tangent. I didn't think you meant "competitive" and I don't think what we are envisioning is best described as "not (fill in the blank) site". But, I think there's a strong chance that MR may be perceived that way at first simply due to circumstances. I feel that one of the ways we make it clear that MR is what it is, and not what it is not, is by keeping the focus on the positive - the "is" - the goal and vision.

Really .. if any of you have time, that subforum is a most interesting and pertinent read ...
My own views on anarchy haven't changed since then (always been an anarchist at heart), but my willingness to accept people enough to give it a go on a forum certainly has.
That said, there will always be the reality that we are not a law unto ourselves ... and if we keep that in mind, that society has a system in place that we can rely on to deal with justice in areas we as a relatively small group are not equipped to do so, it will be part of what will contribute to the forum success, I think ... I hope ... that element of handing anything outside our limits to the law of the wider society we operate in.

I like what he said there...
Therefore I wonder whether "lack of moderation" might also include a non-intrusive janitorial role. In other words, if someone posts something illegal, it gets removed without any comment; if someone posts an unpleasant image (but not illegal), it gets spoilered without comment (or spoiler-buttoned to say "contains graphic images").

I must ask her how she feels about that ininvited exposure now ... six years later ...
During the days that beheadings were almost daily news I found myself quite traumatized by reading and hearing about it. Stories and pictures of the missing and then the captive pictures and later still, reporting of the finding of the victim's beheaded body transported my mind to the terror of being that individual. I don't take the portrayal of such imagery lightly and do not consider myself overly sensitive. How a 15 year old would be affected I don't know. But I would strongly approve of the unquestioned spoilering of images relating to death, torture , trauma , carnage etc if they be found on the site.
I would encourage members to warn others of the content of such spoilered images. Spoilering such images does not remove the content, but recognizes that not everyone has the stomach or internal fortitude to view such images without distress.

We have not had such an opportunity before to include EVERYONE with something to say. This gets closer than I would have imagined in my lifetime.
To me, it is not just an analogy.

I think it had to do with the server being kinda busy atm.
Ignore works to an extent. You'll see how it impacts things like search and thread listings if we ever get someone with that kind of post output.
Ignore worked well enough for me, personally. not for a lot of people.
Ignore (and just not reading for that matter) works fine, the trouble is when some people just can't resist replying. Look at Socrates for an example of where that didn't happen. hopefully Yukon is an example of where people are doing it right and not giving a shitposter the oxygen they need.

I'll do it here. On TR it is impossible to ignore me by virtue of mod status, so I won't ignore anyone else; feels like an abuse of power. But here it's fair game.

As admins here are not moderators, should it be allowable to place an admin on ignore? And is that technically doable?

yeah, at FF, most of the regulars put him on ignore.
The effect of having him on ignore was pretty amazing in some threads.
yeah he was actually pretty stressful... he would guilt people for his own abusive behavior which is it's own kind of monster

The system can't detect the difference between a sock puppet and a regular member (given they are the same thing data-wise). If a special exception doesn't already exist in this particular forum, you'd have to create one by fiddling with the forum code.

Not likely to catch all of them. ISP numbers can change simply because of the behaviour of a particular provider or router, let alone deliberate ISP changes.

So, sock puppets and polls. During the planning phase for MindRomp, we talked about putting known sock puppets into a user group that would not be able to vote in polls. This is quite doable, though we may not readily identify all sock puppets.
That issue aside, should sock puppets be prevented from voting in all polls anywhere on the site? Prevented from voting in polls related to how the site works and is governed? Something else?
What are your thoughts?

Wouldn't want something like that to happen here.
eta I doubt the intent at ratz was to minimize member awareness or input, btw. That's just how it worked out.

Normally, I would say that socks shouldn't vote, but here where the votes can not affect the core ethics, why not leave it to someone other than the administration?

Someone's harassing you, you think. You suspect they are someone giving you a hard time and hiding behind a sockpuppet. You ask someone with buttons: Is this member somebody's sockpuppet and if so, whose?
Most sockpuppetry is just people having fun, no need to ask for a reveal. If you're being seriously annoyed, I don't see why they have a right to hide.

Why shouldn't you have to ask? Most of the possible socks on the site likely have nothing to do with you in terms of teasing to the point of harassment. What good is served by outing them? What business is it of yours if they aren't bothering you?

Why shouldn't you have to ask? Most of the possible socks on the site likely have nothing to do with you in terms of teasing to the point of harassment. What good is served by outing them? What business is it of yours if they aren't bothering you?
Well, I abolished the word trolling from my vocabulary exactly 3 months ago. It serves no purpose.
I have a reasonable amount of trust of the present staff, but there again they may know things about some conversations I'm having that I don't know, like the user who's getting under my skin the most is actually a sock. Is that really acceptable?
You realise you sound freakily paranoid, right?

Thanks rud - but if staff know who are socks, and don't share the information what are the implications for the janitor title (it's battered enough as it is!)
If socks become known and my ip will be incontrovertible :D they should be outed, which is a potential pain in the bum for the janitors, it also won't stop the people who really want to deceive though. That's the grain of salt you have to take with the internetz.

It doesn't bother me to be honest, I can see why the voting would annoy some but if discovered socks were a separate user group as oblivion suggested I don't see why it should bother anyone. If you turn out to be a poe or a nutter or just a wind up merchant that won't bother me too much either, it also wouldn't surprise me overly. After you find out who the socks are are you going to start looking for references?

Oh but they aren't staff, they are janitors; there is no hierarchy; there are no favoured ones here. And if Gawdzilla through his sock is harassing me here as he did on Ratz from the advantage of being the mods' Golden Boy, it can be the janitors' little secret I suppose and they can all have a good old laugh together at my expense.
You carrying a lot of shit from Ratz, fairly, and dumping it on us, unfairly.

It takes effort to work out who is who. We can check IPs and then match them to member's IPs, but what a pain. I'll do it though, on a case by case basis, if you are being harassed. What I won't do is go through the member list now and match up IPs.
Tell you what though. If you're being harassed, put the person on ignore. Problem solvered.

I think everyone is giving you terrible advice. They should be telling you to play Mafia with us and put all of that paranoia to good use so that when you lynch the bad guy you can feel personally vindicated. It will also give you new reasons to continue to see your shrink. <--- this is me joking with you btw.
Seriously though, be careful about letting people on the interwebz know what bugs you cos some of them are like sharks and as soon as they smell blood they will circle around and eat you alive until you are curled up in a fetal position. And I like you, Exi, so I will no doubt spend an inordinate amount of time defending you.
I don't have a sock on here but I thought of creating one just to fuck with the staff (not in mean way, in a funsprirted guess who I am kind of way) but I am pretty sure Oblivion would figure it out. If I ever do create one I promise to let you know.

I thought vBulletin had the option of opening a thread with the mod panel, clicking on a post and doing a "who is" look up which lists all of the posters who are posting from that IP address. It does not help with phoneposting unless they are a frequent poster and then sometimes the IP address will recycle itself although not always to the same user, lol. Also in the UK the IP addresses can sometimes naturally be dynamic and that can be a pain too. If you are having to look up every single IP address on an individual basis, omg.
Speaking of IP addresses, Beerjuana may show up with mine but it isn't me, it is my partner who will probably never post here.
eta: why am I even talking about this shit, it is an unmoderated site and people know that from the get go. Sorry.

And quite frankly if a member came to me bitching about someone as an admin kind of person, but more importantly, someone who believes in free speech, I'd tell them to take it out into the open.

You missed my point, Elouise. It's not just about me being harassed. Being harassed I can cope with. What I'm against is people playing games with people while 'janitors' sit back knowing exactly what's going on yet saying nothing.
If janitors see a whole group of 5 or 6 socks toying with 1 member, who may not even be aware of what's going on - isn't there something rather sinister about that, over and above janitors being just janitors? Doesn't it begin to feel a bit like a sneaky way of disciplining an unpopular member, in the absence of buttons that will do the job?
I think there should be a list of known sock puppets published somewhere so we can all check from time to time. What's unreasonable about that?

I wonder if there is a way to give people access to the button that shows that the member has the same ip as someone without showing the ip itself? I know on some forums you can limit the access to the ip address to admin rather than mods but mods can still see if someone has the same ip as someone else.

I am equally uncomfortable with having a whole range of information available to a much larger number of people that I don't know at all.
Janitors irl typically have access to all kinds of things nobody else in the building has, like keys to all the offices and storage rooms, etc., stores of chemicals for cleaning/maintaining equipment, tools, machines, and so on. Seems reasonable.

What difference does it make if you're being harrassed by a member, or a member's sock? Ignore the putz. :dunno:
That is the first time I've ever used the word putz. I hope it's the last. :stare:
I don't think there's anything unreasonable about it. I don't have a preference either way.
Speaking for myself: Regardless who the mob might be, or who the person mobbed is, whether or not I'm an admin/janitor/whatever, if I think it fair and helpful to comment, I certainly wouldn't sit back and say nothing ... and I'm not obliged to keep secrets .. none of us are .. and will use my discretion about that.
But, as I said, I'm neutral on whether or not we should have a sock puppet list. If the sock puppets are in a separate group that doesn't have voting permission, you'll see them listed in that group, I believe.

I am simply uncomfortable with the pretense that staff are 'just' janitors when they have access to a whole range of information the the ordinary members don't.
Seems reasonable.
ok

Janitors irl don't have access to each resident's files. They're usually kept in the administration office; janitors aren't administrators, they're janitors.

Obviously we need a laundry room. Socks naturally disappear when subjected to the washer and dryer.

So staff should have special privileges and yet we are supposed to pretend they do not? Oh. I see. Ok. They're just "janitors" *wink wink*
