The sign up agreement page 1

Cunt suggested this early on and the idea was met with thumbs up.

I favour a short, concise list of statements about the forum ethos that people registering must agree to by ticking agree to each statement, before their registration can be completed.

Cunt's idea is to have multiple choice questions that must be answered correctly before their registration can be completed.

Are either of these ideas implementable, ob?

General thoughts, ideas and suggestions, please.

I think they are both implementable, but I am not sure that we can have someone get stuck on the quiz page until they score 100% or whatever using the quiz add-on I've seen at vbulletin. My javascript/c#/whatever skills are not up to the task of writing a quiz app from scratch. There may be a non-vbulletin app that I could modify for our needs, though.

A quiz that doesn't fail you, or a form with check boxes, those I could probably implement and configure in less than a day. I can move that to the top of my to-do list if it's on the critical path to opening day.

re the bit I've bolded ... this is what I have in mind. It would be a replacement for, or addition to, the default "I agree" section people must tick on registration. A tailor made version. For user friendliness and best result, it would have to be a brief series of statements about our forum's unique ethos and expecations, and worded clearly and concisely.

We agreed on an 18+ forum?

Can the checklist be implemented as part of that "I certify that I am 18+" aspect to signing up?
Cunt
23rd December 2011, 03:53 AM
YES!

Okay, checklist...

1. You may take responsibility for a portion of the content of this forum by posting.

2. Only spam / illegal content will be removed. Say anything you want and stand behind it.

3. Personally identifying information will be removed by request.

4. Any request for admin action must be made publicly in the appropriate forum.
charlou

Concise!

Needs a couple more though

Admin actions are limited to technical maneuvres, deleting spam/spammers, and removing illegal content.

postcards are not protected.

those should be spelled out, too.

Something about editing posts, too. Speaking of which, I'll start a new thread about that.

re the 18+ ceritification thing ... do we really need to have that? I mean, can we not have 18+ content regardless? Google does.

Maybe change some of the wording to be more personal ... ? I've changed the word 'manoeuvres' to 'procedures' as the former can have an unwanted connotation. I've made the part about postcards more explanatory. That last one could probably be trimmed/condensed ... ?

*I take responsibility for a portion of the content of this forum by posting

*I can say anything I want and will be responsible for what I say.

*Spam and illegal content will be removed. Personally identifying information will be removed by request.

*A request for admin action can be made in the appropriate forum and will be dealt with publicly.

*Admin actions are limited to technical procedures, deleting spam/spammers, and removing illegal content.

*While members may send Postcard Messages among themselves in relative privacy, the forum will not protect the privacy of members. I am responsible for my own interactions and disclosures.

'can be' seems like one option of several. What do you think of making it more like 'must be' (too strong). My goal is to make it clear that only properly made complaints can expect to be dealt with.

Thanks Cunt .. I'm not sure I can readily articulate why, but for me gathering our core values into some sort of tangible and informative, and hopefully indestructible/uncorruptable list is the most important and challenging aspect to setting this forum up.

To request admin action, I will make a request post in the appropriate forum. My request will be dealt with publicly.

Also, where is the appropriate forum?

changes to functionality and structure - forum x
report a bad post - forum y
changes to governance - forum ?

re the bits I've bolded ... Actually, do we even need any of that as part of the sign up agreement? It could be included in the FAQ?

I've updated the form to reflect this. I think it's a work in progress, but I'll try to keep the form up to date with what is currently agreed upon.

If you want to look at the form and how it's defined, go to the quick links menu in the navbar. At the bottom of that list there is now a "form" link. Click that. On that page you can do several things. If you click the link to the only form (so far), you can see what the form looks like. There is a drop down box on the right side. It starts empty (fill out the form), but there are several options, including to edit or delete the form. You can also create a new form from that page. We may never need that option, but who knows!

It's all bolded? I'm guessing you mean the parts about which forums for what sorts of requests?

I was just asking from a "how are we going to set up the forums?" perspective.

There is an option to add some additional description after each question. We can eventually hook the descriptions up to links to FAQs, threads, whatever we like.
charlou

I meant to bold all of it.

I agree with we need to work out the forums we need for this ... and when we have, that information should be included in the forum FAQ ... which is separate to this sing up agreement.

so you are thinking scratch that question altogether?

Or make the point a different way?

"I understand that all discussions about forum administration and admin actions take place in public forums"

Something like that?

Thanks!. lol, I've been totally geeking out this week! Was wishing I had more time. I'm on vacation now, so will be able to do server side stuff pretty much whenever instead of mostly waiting until I'm home from the office.

I still like the idea of the forced read thread, but it could be expanded to thank people for doing the acknowledgement, providing a link to the forum in case they bypassed it, and providing info on how to edit their profile, etc.

We can force them to read the thread that sends them to the form.

I'm still thinking about how to do this. What would be required is a database read to see if the member has an acknowledgement on file. The new thread and new post routines would have to check for that acknowledgement each time a new post is made or a new thread is started. I could put a new field in the user profile info to indicate the acknowledgement form has been filled out.

I'm worried this could slow things down eventually as the site gets larger and busier.
Cunt
24th December 2011, 07:18 PM
How about acknowledgement required to access the 'deeper forums'? Would that make it easier?
oblivion
24th December 2011, 07:24 PM
It would make the code more complicated. And we'd have to identify which are the deeper forums so they could be checked for. And we'd have to update the code when we add another deeper forum.

I am going to talk to a friend about this. He might be able to come up with a simpler solution than what I am envisioning. maybe I could work it to only check for an acknowledgement if the post count is zero.
