No state income tax.
The legislature only meets for six months every 2 years.
The governor has very limited powers, the Lt. Governor has all the real shits.

The constitution requires a popular vote to amend.

umm no state income tax in TN either

We have sales tax on food, however.

Bizarre booze laws

As many rabidly fundie Christians as the eye can see with their 5 or more babies they pop out like gumballs,

State legislature is definitely part time but they still do plenty of damage along with the governor doing things like passing laws that violate civil rights of minority groups and women all in the name of turning this state into a theocracy.

Public transit and services for the disabled are a fucking joke.

oh yeah gotta love TN ... (NOT)

Oh we have all the guns too and cops can wear them into the courthouse and actually almost start a shootout in a courtroom because a cop gets right in a sitting judge's face and threatens him during an arraignment in the judge's own courtroom, wearing said gun oh yeah that was a fun experience :traumatized:

I am not anti gun but yeah watching a 6 foot 5 cop with his hand on his holster and his torso over the bench and his face and other hand in the judge's face like 5 inches away, while two bailiffs had their hands on their weapons at the ready. THAT was quite an experience indeed.

Especially since it was the same 6 foot 5 cop who had used his height and bulk to almost shove me on my walker off the stoop 3 days before that arraignment.

Eastern TN though is pretty much rednecks who mostly are mourning the loss of their superhero The Bibleman being no longer allowed to have school sponsored assemblies that force ALL kids to go see him in public schools. After all hes been a superhero passing out his Bible verses for 40 years now.

A tip for the unwary: paying income tax isn't a bad thing

Historically ignorant.

The 100 years prior to the income tax, the value of the US dollar was consistent. The dollar you earned today was equal in value to the dollar you spent 50 years later.

After the income tax, the dollar's value, over the past 100 years, has been reduced to $0.04, or rather, it has lost 96% of its value.

The income tax additionally gave government the ability to fund the enormous predatory banking system we have today. Not to mention the ability to prosecute the constant wars on the scale we do today.

Plus the immorality of taking from a person's ability to feed, cloth, and house themselves.

The income tax is a means for the elite class to take the labor of the working class, then use it against them.

What would you say is good about the income tax?
Jerome
12th September 2016, 10:18 PM
public transit often is a joke

Public transit is generally funded by the fees, plus tax revenue from the locale, thus not income tax, rather from the budget of the country or counties served by the system, which would come from various fees and property tax.

Income tax does not pay for public transit.

Approximately 28% of the income tax collected by the federal government was paid in interest, with about 32% going to military spending.

Yes a percentage is from ticket sales, but ticket sales alone would not cover the full costs of running even the very rudementary bus service they have here in Cleveland, TN.

You need both local and state funds being channeled in to cover the costs.

Even paying the bus drivers barely above minimum wage alone would cost more than the ticket fees they charge. Much less the buying, maintaining, and gas for the buses themselves, liability insurance and so on.

You do understand that the county and the state are different things, yes?

Our Metro here in DC is paid for by the counties, not the states, that is how it works most everywhere.
rachmarie
12th September 2016, 10:44 PM
DC is different from the states. Yes the counties run them but they get funds from the states and even some funds and grants from the feds. all the monies are very intermixed.

For example in California, schools are basically funded by property tax at the local level (city and county), but they get state funds, and federal funds for different things, including grants, and so on, plus they get lottery money for certain things. And there is state matching funds that are awarded based on if the city or county raises a certain amount through bonds on the ballot for building new schools due to population overload.

Oakdale spent several years having year round school because they were not able to pass the local bonds needed to receive the state matching funds and so were well behind on schools to meet the needs of the small town.

I do know a thing or two about how things are funded.
Jerome

You need both local and state funds being channeled in to cover the costs.

The Cleveland, TN Transit system is funded by a local sales tax (this is extra on top of the state sales tax), property taxes, beer tax, and business licensing fees.

Not sure how you are not understating that local services are paid for with local revenue, but they are, and very few cities and counties have income tax.

Jerome
12th September 2016, 10:55 PM
Now you have switched to education from public transit, that is a slightly different animal.

Traditionally, education was funded by local property taxes, over the years, as a means of control, the state and the feds have offered bribes to the locals residences of money back for their schools systems if they followed the state and federal mandates.

On average, currently, local provides 45%, state 46% and feds 9%.

On a serious note, it has more to do with language. Can you speak Spanish, well you are hispanic then.

Now, hispanics/latinos tend to see themselves as american from Puerto Rico, or Mexico, or wherever. In the same way an English speaker sees themselves as american from Germany, or Sweden, or Italy.

The whole trying to fit hispanics into a box like the political class has done with blacks has not worked out so well.

too be fair, the spaniards and the natives interbred quite a bit. in fact, there is a racist system in Mexico based on how much "native" ancestry you have vs "spanish" ancestry, as my Mother in Law would point out every chance she got...that she was Spanish, not Mexican, because Mexicans were Indians, and even amongst the Native Americans there is a heirarchy of "coolness" ...and it gets even more convoluted when you start adding in the other central American countries, which have tribal identities as well as Spanish identities and heck, even some from other European imperial powers that wandered down there and fucked things up.

And then you have the Puerto Ricans, and the Cubans, who dislike each other, and my ex husbands new Girlfriend who is From the Phillipines and despises being confused with a Mexican...

so yeah, the only thing "hispanic" means is that the person speaks spanish...

Most prefer the term Latino/Latina now because it both embraces their language a bit more with the masculine and feminine, and because they fell it better describes them.

Those early Spaniards were busy. The whole hierarchy thing about how much native versus Castilian blood is definitely very prevalent, especially in Mexico. My mom was at a caucus meeting at one of the state conventions one year and the speaker was going on about how she was almost pure Native American and not much Castilian in her, and my mom finally popped up with HER heritage, and one of the black guys smiled and said oh you are one of those 32nders I see.

At one point one drop of black blood was enough to be considered black, My great granpa's granpa was Creole who married a French immigrant and their kids could pass for white. My great granma (mom's mom's mom) had tribal rights to the Cherokee nation. Still considered white. I just happened to have the extremely fair skin of a ginger from my Celtic heritage on both sides, I could have been born darker skinned, more likely looking more native since I have far more on both sides than I do Creole.

I would love to see us get past skin color some day no matter what color your skin is and realize bottom line we are all HUMAN.

We were almost there, then Obama used his presidency to foment racial divisions, taking us back 40 years.

Take a look at a movie like Blade from the 90's, a black protagonist, a female who was not a love interest .. movies reflect culture.

Today we have SJWs trying to run the culture by complaining about that which did not exist. You see, there is power in having an oppressed class under your thumb, to exert power in the name of justice. Without oppressed classes, this power structure disintegrates.

We don't have a Hispanic category, at least not officially.

People who identify their origin as Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish may be of any race.

Hmm in California it does have White (not Hispanic) and Hispanic.

I've seen that distinction as well. I'm not sure where. What I quoted above was from the US census (just in case you can't read the URL). I don't think I've seen Hispanics grouped with Native Americans as Gib suggested.

Well, now this is interesting. Wikipedia's breakdown for the population of Houston. They don't even include the Native or Pacific Islander categories.

Racial composition| 2010| 1990| 1970
White| 50.5%| 52.7%| 73.4%
—Non-Hispanic whites| 25.6%| 40.6%| 62.4%
Black or African American| 23.7%| 28.1%| 25.7%,

That reminds me when Obama released his birth certificate from 1961 which listed "African' as a race.

They were trying to be politically correct instead of historically accurate, they didn't want to offend anyone with negro on a 1961 birth certificate.

As the 1960 census notes, the categories were White or Colored, the later consisting of Negro, American Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, etc.

Note that there is no Hispanic, any non Indian was considered White. Also note that African is not a race in the 60's.

I just happened to have the extremely fair skin of a ginger from my Celtic heritage on both sides, I could have been born darker skinned, more likely looking more native since I have far more on both sides than I do Creole.

I would love to see us get past skin color some day no matter what color your skin is and realize bottom line we are all HUMAN.

saw a couple the other day with coffee colored kids with curly strawberry blond hair

That is the Mexican President, certainly not mixed with the natives from whom Mexico was stolen.

the whole 'hispanic' category you have over there baffles us over here

We don't have a Hispanic category, at least not officially.

5 categories are White, Black, Native, Asian, Pacific Islander
People who identify their origin as Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish may be of any race.

As for Jiffy he is an awesome dude and a good friend and we will be doing a fair bit of biz stuff together, particularly after I move to Buffalo in about a year.

what if someone is from Turkey, how would you deal with that?

White.

We only have five categories.

White – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.
Black or African American – A person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa.
American Indian or Alaska Native – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment.
Asian – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands.

The truth of it is, natives and islanders are Asian. There are only three 'races'.

Shem, Ham, and Japheth

Funny how reality fits with an over 3,000 year old text when the writers could have no clue that there were only three races on the earth.

Officially:
White – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.

But I think most Americans tend to see Muslim/Arabian/Middle Eastern as a race and probably lump in Pakistani/Indian with them rather than Asians.

But maybe that's just my personal bias growing up on the west coast where Asian is definitely East-Asian.

message for anyone who has a signed-up profile on MafiaScum (http://forum.mafiascum.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=68946)

Yesterday at about 3am EDT, an unknown actor was able to breach the mafiascum.net database, which includes posts in both public and private forums, as well as private messages between users. We don't know the perpetrator's intentions or who they are.

For all users who have logged in since the 3.0 upgrade a while back, passwords are salted and hashed with a decent algorithm, and users prior to this point have hashed passwords. (This means if you've logged in any time recently, your password is hard to crack, but not impossible through brute force.)

You, as a user should take these steps now:
1. Change your password on this site. In keeping with good security practices, you should not use the same password across websites.
2. If you are using the same password on this site on other websites, you should change those too, especially if you share a username or email address on those websites.
3. Notify us if you encounter any unusual access to your account.

As we learn more pertinent details, we'll let you know. We value your privacy, which is why we are releasing these details as a precautionary measure. If you have any information regarding this breach, please contact me by email.

We hope nothing worse comes from this, but we want you to be aware and able to prepare for every possibility and for you to be able to secure your data appropriately. We're implementing additional security measures to prevent recurrence of such a breach, so as to better protect you and the site. Thank you.

I like Jiffy he is a good friend, and the kind of guy I wish I had met like 15 or 20 years ago, back when I wanted to find a man to grow old with me, and was young enough to do so.

Of course now I just want to find a spell that keeps me from ever falling IN love again and just go out and have fun with FWBs and forget all this finding some guy and growing old with him. After all I am never going to grow old

And maybe if I had focused back then on just doing FWBs and having fun instead of all the responsibility stuff, I might have had the confidence I needed to find a guy who really would have been there for the long haul. Too late now, will have to wait for my next lifetime. No guy is going to fall in love with an almost 51 year old woman who has never been married, and is unable to have kids. Meh I sometimes really wish David had not died. He was a rare soul indeed. Even if it took him a while to fall in love with me, he did that.

I may have my own form of beauty, but it is the kind that most guys just say hey I like her and want her as my best friend or my sister.

Plus I am just too weird for most guys. They want the girl next door, the pretty young thing. The woman who fits in with society and is viewed as what a girl is supposed to be.

I just do not fit that pattern.
